Young Sooners Represent at Midlands Championships

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - The No. 20/22/22 (Flo/InterMat/Track) Oklahoma wrestling squad sent a young lineup that included two freshmen, five redshirt freshmen and two redshirt sophomores to the 57th annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships at Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill., Sunday

Three Sooners advanced as far as Sunday evening's consolation rounds of eight, each picking up at least two wins on the day.

Redshirt senior Christian Moody (125), the most veteran Sooner to make the trip, used an 8-1 decision over Brown's Trey Keeley to advance to the round of 16, where he fell to the nation's No. 1 125-pounder (according to FloWrestling), Iowa's Spencer Lee. Moody tallied his first pin of the season with a fall (1:24) to defeat Brandon Seidman of Bucknell in the second consolation round of 16. The Sooner was defeated in a tough, 11-9 battle with Eric Barnett from Wisconsin.

Redshirt freshman Jacob Butler (149) and redshirt sophomore Jake Boyd (197) led OU with three wins each on Sunday. Butler pinned Purdue's Nate Limmex and upset No. 22 Alec Hagan (Ohio), 3-0, on his way to an appearance in the consolation rounds of eight. Butler's only two losses came to No. 1 Austin O'Connor (North Carolina) and No. 16 Kizhan Clarke (American).

At 197, Boyd opened the tournament with a pin (3:25) of SIUE's Jake McKiernan and a 7-2 decision over Sam Wustefield (Columbia), before dropping a 9-1 major decision to No. 2 Jacob Warner of Iowa. The Sooner rebounded with a 4-2 decision over Warner's teammate, Connor Corbin. Boyd also reached the consolation rounds of eight, where he was pinned by Minnesota's Hunter Ritter in 3:15.

Five more Sooners added a win to their season records, advancing to the consolation rounds of 16.

Redshirt freshman Josiah Jones (HWT) secured a pin of Joshua Eckmann (Omega TC) in just 59 seconds. Also representing the Sooners at heavyweight, redshirt sophomore Collin McCoy topped Niko Comacho (American) with an 11-2 major decision in the consolation bracket.

True freshman Darrien Roberts (184), who has appeared in each of the Sooners' three dual lineups in the 2019-20 season, opened the day with a 6-3 decision over Jon Halverson (Northwestern), before dropping close 6-3 and 4-3 decisions.

Reshirt freshmen Zack Zeamer (149) and Elijah Joseph (174) each went 1-2 at the tournament, while freshman Sam Dover and and redshirt freshman Tommy Hoskins went 0-2.

Up next, the Sooners head to Athens, Ohio, on Sunday, Jan. 5, for a road dual with Ohio University (2-3). The Sooners' (1-2) fourth dual of the season is set for 2 p.m. CT.
