Demas Claims Title at Journeymen Classic

TROY, N.Y. - No. 2/2/2 (Flo/InterMat/Trackwrestling) Dom Demas won the 141 title and the No. 20/20/21/20 (NWCA/Flo/InterMat/Track) Sooners continued their strong start to the season at the 2019 Journeymen Collegiate Classic in Troy, N.Y.
Demas won the tournament's Hammer Award, given to the top wrestler in each class, for the second consecutive season with a first-period fall over No. 7/7/7 Chad Red in the 141 finals bout. The redshirt sophomore went 3-0 on the day, also picking up a 10-2 major decision over George Mason's Alex Madrigal and a 13-10 decision over Nebraska's Christian Miller.
No. 12/17/13 Anthony Madrigal (133) continued his hot start to the season, picking up a fall to beat No. 10/7/6 DJ Fehlman (Lock Haven) and a TB-2 decision (6-3) over No. 15/NR/20 Nick Farro (Lehigh). The sophomore went 2-2 at the tournament and improves to 4-1 against ranked competition through two events this season.
Freshman Darrien Roberts shined in his collegiate debut, sweeping his way through the 184 C pool with a pin of Lachlan Rosato (Davidson) and a pair of decisions. Redshirt freshman Jacob Butler, who picked up his first win as a Sooner at least week's Michigan State Open, also went 3-0 through the 149 B pool.
At 174 pounds, No. NR/NR/28 Anthony Mantanona picked up his fourth pin of the year, upsetting No. 11/12/16 Kimball Bastian of Utah Valley in 1:52. The redshirt sophomore went 2-1 with his only loss coming in a 6-1 decision by No. 10/10/11 Anthony Valencia (Arizona State). No. 17/11/15 Justin Thomas (157A) and No. 17/17/12 Jake Woodley (197A) each also went 2-1 to take third place in their respective pools.
Zack Zeamer (149) tallied his first victory as a Sooner with a 4-3 TB-2 decision over Selwyn Porter (The Citadel).
Three Sooners wrestled at 285. Collin McCoy went 2-1 in the C pool, while Josiah Jones went 1-2 and Connor Webb finished 0-3 in the A pool. Jones and Webb were both defeated by No. 3/3/4 Jordan Wood (Lehigh), while Jones' second loss was to No. 4/2/3 Tanner Hall (Arizona State).
Jose Lao Cooper (165) and Ruston Duke (184) went 1-3 and 1-2, respectively. At 125, Tommy Hoskins went 1-2, while Christian Moody went 0-3.
The Sooners are back in action Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Kent State Tri, where they will face off against Kent State and Michigan State.
