KENT, Ohio – The No. 20/21/23/19 Oklahoma wrestling team split its pair of duals at the Kent State Tri in Kent, Ohio, on Saturday, taking down Kent State, 29-7, and falling to No. NR/NR/29 Michigan State, 21-16.

The tri meet consisted of the Sooners' first two duals of the young season, moving their record to 1-1 overall. OU took eight of the ten bouts against Kent State, while splitting its matches with Michigan State at five each. Five Sooners went 2-0 on the day, each defeating both a Spartan and Golden Flash.

At 133, No. 13/16/13 Anthony Madrigal took both of his bouts on the day to earn the Sooners three points in each dual. The sophomore shutout Michigan State's Garrett Pepple, taking a 5-0 decision in the day's first round. In the second round, Madrigal held onto a 4-3 lead over No. 25/NR/NR Tim Rooney (Kent State) heading into the third period before securing a 7-5 victory.

No. 2/2/2 Dom Demas also went 2-0 at the meet. After a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation, Demas struck first against Michigan State's Matt Santos in sudden-overtime, claiming the 3-1 victory. Later in the day, Demas exploded with 13 points in the first period off of Cory Simpson (Kent State), eventually using the riding time point to claim a 20-5 technical fall.

Oklahoma's 157-pounder, No. 17/20/17 Justin Thomas, recorded a 6-2 victory over No. 23/NR/16 Jake Tucker of Michigan State and a 7-3 decision over Kent State's Brady Chrisman. It was Thomas' second 6-2 decision over Tucker of the season, as the two faced off at the Michigan State Open on Nov. 2.  At 174, No. 21/NR/22 Anthony Mantanona grabbed 6-3 and 12-8 decisions over Layne Malczewski (MSU) and No. 24/NR/20 Andrew McNally (KSU), respectively.

No. 16/17/12 Jake Woodley pulled out a narrow 3-2 victory over KSU's No. 24/NR/NR Colin McCracken, while also tallying a major decision with a 12-3 defeat of Spartan Nick May.

The Sooners' heavyweight, Josiah Jones, pinned Kent State's Spencer Berthhold early in the day and took MSU's Christian Rebottaro to the wire, falling short 3-1.

Darrien Roberts, who picked up his first collegiate victories going 3-0 at last weekend's Journeymen Collegiate Classic, won a 5-3 decision over Kent State's Tyler Bates at 184 and kept it close with No. 19/18/17 Cameron Caffey before being pinned in the second period.

At 149, Jacob Butler took KSU's Kody Komara to sudden-victory overtime and pulled out a 6-4 win. Michigan State's Jaden Enriquez outlasted Butler in their own sudden-victory match, 3-1.

At 125 and 165, respectively, Tommy Hoskins and Jose Lao Cooper each went 0-2.
