Sooners Drop Overtime Battle to Jayhawks
October 10, 2019 | Soccer
NORMAN – The Oklahoma soccer team dropped a 1-0 overtime decision to Kansas Thursday night at John Crain Field.
With two minutes to go in the first overtime period, Kansas' Katie McClure sent a shot off the crossbar. On the rebound, Mandi Duggan fired a shot from eight yards out to net the golden goal and give the Jayhawks the win.
"I think that the game was played by two good teams and it was going to be limited opportunities in-front of goal," head coach Matt Potter said. "For however many minutes you can count, we did a very good job, but the one minute we step away from what we've done so well, we got punished for it. That sometimes happens but you have to look at the quality of what we did today. We created more chances, we got a ton of opportunities and just didn't finish it; that sometimes happens."
The Sooners have now played three overtime games in Big 12 play, going 1-1-1, with a win over Kansas State and a draw against Texas Tech. On the year, OU has gone to overtime eight times, posting a 3-2-3 record in those games. The eight overtime games rank third all-time in OU history.
The teams got off to a slow start in the first half, battling high winds and low temperatures. The two teams combined for just eight shots with the Sooners holding a narrow 5-3 advantage.
In the second half, the Sooners came out strong with multiple opportunities to find the go-ahead goal.
In the 70th minute, senior Kaylee Dao fired off a shot from distance, just missing the first goal of the game as the ball sailed over the crossbar. Seconds later, junior Erika Yost followed with a shot of her own that also skimmed the crossbar.
Dao narrowly missed a goal scoring opportunity in the 73rd minute as she fired from eight-yards out toward the near post. The Kansas keeper made a diving save to set up an OU corner kick, but the Sooners couldn't convert.
OU outshot the Jawyhawks, 16-10, on the night, with a 6-4 shot on goal advantage. Yost led the team with four shots, while Dao and fellow senior Kristina O'Donnell each tallied three.
"What I've really applauded in our group is that we have great character; we continue to work," Potter said. "Anytime we've had the result go against us, we found a way to rebound and put in a good performance. That is what we will have to do, we will have to put in a good performance because Baylor is another quality team."
The Sooners will host Baylor at John Crain Field on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT. The match will air on Fox Sports Southwest.
