NORMAN --Ā The Oklahoma soccer team (6-4-3, 1-1-1 Big 12) is set to host a pair of conference matches this weekend as Kansas and Baylor come to Norman. The Sooners and Jayhawks will face off on Thursday at 7 p.m. CT, with OU and Baylor set to kick off at 1 p.m. CT on Sunday.
Thursday's game will air on Fox Sports Oklahoma and the Fox Sports Go app. Chad McKee and former OU soccer player Liz Keester will call the action, with Meg McDonald on the sidelines. Sunday's match is set to air on Fox Sports Southwest with Brenda VanLengen and Jessica Stamp on the call. Ā Ā
GOLDEN GIRL
For the third time this season, senior Kaylee Dao came up with the golden goal to lead Oklahoma to an overtime victory. Tied at 2-all with Kansas State, Dao found the back of the net in the first overtime period to give the Sooners their first conference win of the season. The Tulsa, Okla., native also secured the golden goal in a 1-0 win at Arkansas on Aug. 25 and a 3-2 victory at Tulsa on Sept. 1. Ā
THE WEEKEND UPDATE
The Sooners won their first conference game of the season to improve to 1-1-1 on the year in Big 12 play. OU defeated Kansas State, 3-2, behind a hat trick from Dao. The hat trick was the first by an OU soccer player since 2015 and just the fourth in program history. Dao notched her third multi-goal game of the year with the incredible feat and brought her season total to 11 goals which ranks eighth nationally and first in the Big 12.
DAO NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Dao was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week after netting her first career hat trick. This is her third career honor and second this season. The Tulsa, Okla. native led the conference with six points, all coming via her first-career hat trick in OU's 3-2 win over Kansas State. The three-goal game was the first for a Sooner since 2015 and just the fourth hat trick in program history. With the Sooners in their seventh overtime game of the season, Dao completed the feat with her third game-winning golden goal of the year.
SUNDAYS ARE FOR THE SOONERS
The Sooners have shown that Sunday is their favorite day, posting a 4-1-1 record in Sunday games. OU won its first three Sunday games of the year and has scored at least one goal in every game. OU has won two overtime games on Sundays with wins at Arkansas (Aug. 25) and Tulsa (Sept. 1) and defeated both Arizona and Houston, 2-1, in regulation. Dao has scored at least one goal in four of the six Sunday games, including two game winners. Sophomore keeper Megan McClay is 4-1-0 on Sundays in goal in this season.Ā
SERIES HISTORY
The Sooners are 9-13-2 all-time against Kansas. In 2018, the two teams went to overtime with the Jayhawks prevailing, 2-1. Against Baylor, the Sooners are 7-10-6 all-time after falling, 1-0, to the Bears in 2018. The last time the Bears came to Norman in 2017, the teams battled to a 0-0 draw. Ā
DAO SENIOR CLASS CANDIDATE
Dao has been chosen as one of 30 candidates for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award in college soccer. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
A two-time All-Big 12 first team honoree and 2018 All-Region second team honoree, Dao has started every game for the Sooners this season. Through 13 games, Dao leads the team with 11 goals, including three game winners and three penalty kick conversions. She has moved in to third all-time in OU history with 27 career goals and fourth all-time with nine game winners.
Dao completed her undergraduate degree with a double major in environmental sustainability and social sciences and organizational studies in Aug. 2019. A redshirt senior, she is working toward a master's degree in human relations and currently boasts a 4.0 GPA.
UNDERCLASSMEN DEPTH DISPLAYED
The Sooners have showcased their depth this season with 25 players seeing action. Of those 24, 17 are underclassmen and nine are freshmen. Freshman Jordan Lund has started all 13 games this season for OU and has played the fourth-most minutes at 1102. Fellow freshman Sydney Sheehan has started 12 games while Caroline Berutti has started 10.
KANSAS
The Jayhawks are 9-4-0 on the season and 1-2-0 in conference play. Kansas opened conference action with a 1-0 loss to Texas before defeating Baylor 4-1. On Sunday, the Jayhawks dropped a 5-2 decision to Oklahoma State.
The Jayhawks have outscored their opponents 27-13, posting five shutouts on the year. Katie McClure leads the team with nine goals and six assists on the year for 24 points. Ten different players have contributed at least one goal with five posting at least two goals. In goal, Sarah Peters has played 1123 minutes, tallying 31 saves and compiling a 9-4-0 record.
BAYLOR
The defending Big 12 Champions are 6-3-3 on the year and 2-1-0 in league action. Baylor opened conference play with a 1-0 win over Kansas State before falling, 4-1, to Kansas. Last week, the Bears took down West Virginia, 4-2, behind a hat trick from freshman Elizabeth Kooiman.
The Bears have tallied 19 goals on the year with three players each tallying three. Camryn Wendlandt leads the team with eight points, followed by seven points from Raegan Padgett. In goal, Jennifer Wandt has seen the most minutes at 1028, recording 41 saves and two shutouts.
The University of Oklahoma will join professional sports leagues and many of its college peers this fall when it introduces a clear bag policy and walk-through metal detectors at home football games and all other home athletic events. It is recommended that fans allow extra time for stadium entry.
The approved clear plastic bag size is a maximum of 12 inches x 6 inches x 12 inches or a one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag. Stadium policy will allow non-transparent clutch purses that are no larger than 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches. Bags that are necessary for medical equipment will be searched at marked medical lanes at each gate. No other bags or purses including diaper bags will be permitted and the limit on bags is one per person.
Fans will empty only cell phones, keys and metal objects larger than keys from their pockets before screening. Medical lanes will be marked around the stadium for fans who require alternate screening methods.
