NORMAN — University of Oklahoma Vice President and Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione and Head Track and Field Coach Jim VanHootegem announced the 2019 OU track and field schedule Wednesday.
The Sooners open their indoor season on Jan. 12 at the Texas Tech Corky Classic in Lubbock, Texas. The following week, OU will host the Sooner Invitational, a special quad meet with Oklahoma State, UT-Arlington and Northwestern State, at the newly-renovated Mosier Indoor Facility on Jan. 19.
The Sooners will split for a pair of meets Jan. 25-26 when members will travel to New York for the Dr. Sander Invitational/Columbia Challenge and Lubbock, Texas, for the Texas Tech Classic.
Oklahoma will host its second indoor meet of the season Feb. 2 in Norman at the annual J.D. Martin Invitational before wrapping up the regular indoor season Feb. 8-9 with some of the team in Fayetteville, Ark. at the Tyson Invitational and others at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa.
Indoor postseason competition begins Feb. 22-23 at the Big 12 Indoor Championship in Lubbock, Texas. The NCAA Indoor Championships are scheduled for March 8-9 in Birmingham, Ala.
VanHootegem said both the indoor and outdoor schedule will feature strong competition at several high-quality meets.
“We're headed to great facilities and seeking great competition. We try from year to year to make sure we are going against all other conferences and the top teams in the nation. That is kind of the basis of our schedule. We are excited about returning to New York during indoors and then outdoors we've always enjoyed traveling to UCLA. They offer not only a lot of great traditions but their facility, as well.
“We're going to open up our home schedule with a little bit of a different formatting in the quad meet, where we are going use traditional quad scoring. Then, we will still have our J.D Martin Invitational and outdoor meet, the John Jacobs Invite. Finally, we're certainly excited to host the Big 12 Outdoor Championships.”
The Sooners begin the outdoor season one week after the conclusion of indoor, opening at the TCU Invitational March 16 in Fort Worth, Texas, prior to the Roadrunner Invitational on March 22-23 in San Antonio.
OU will compete in the elite Texas Relays on March 27-30 in Austin, Texas. Some of the team will
On April 5-6, the Sooners will travel to College Station, Texas, for the Reveille Invitational before returning to Los Angeles for the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational on the campus of UCLA, April 13.
The Sooners will host the 50th annual John Jacobs Invitational in Norman April 19-20. The team will conclude the regular season at the National Relay Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., on April 26-27.
OU gets the opportunity to host the Big 12 Outdoor Championship for the first time since 2011. The outdoor conference meet is slated for May 10-12 in Norman, and the NCAA West Preliminary Round is set for May 23-25 in Sacramento, Calif. Qualifying athletes will advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Austin, Texas, on June 5-8. The 2019 and 2020 outdoor championships will be held at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin before returning to historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon in 2021.
Oklahoma completed a resurfacing of the Mosier Indoor Facility and John Jacobs Track over the summer, which VanHootegem says has given the team an eagerness for the upcoming indoor and outdoor seasons.
“We obviously have a new track and we're excited about it. Our kids are enjoying it. I think they feel good about it and what we've done to our facility and they enjoy training on it and are ready to go.”
