NORMAN – Oklahoma opened its time at the NCAA Austin Regional by shooting a 299 (+11) on Monday at the par-72, 6,341-yard University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas.

The Sooners are tied for 12th place in the 18-team field and are eight strokes out of the top six, which determines the teams that qualify for the finals of the NCAA Championships.

“It was a tough day, but we have two rounds left and anything can happen,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. “We need to go out and believe. We are as good as anyone in the field, it all starts with believing in ourselves and each other.”

Oklahoma was led in the opening round by redshirt freshman Sydney Youngblood, who carded a trio of birdies to finish the day with a 1-under 71. Youngblood is tied for 15th in the individual standings and is three strokes behind first-place Maddie Szeryk of Texas A&M.

Junior Julienne Soo fired a 75 (+3), senior Valerie Tanguay shot a 76 (+4), freshman Kaitlin Milligan collected a 77 (+5) and senior Hannah Wood finished with a 78 (+6).

The Sooners will look to begin their comeback attempt at 8 a.m. on Tuesday when they tee off of hole No. 10. Oklahoma will be paired with golfers from UTSA and Miami with live scoring available on GolfStat.com.
