Sooners Successful On Day Two of Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA—The University of Oklahoma track and field team continued competition Friday at the 124th running of the Penn Relays in Philadelphia. The Sooners claimed one victory and five top-five finishes on day two.

OU head coach Jim VanHootegem spoke about day two, "It was a pretty active day for our team. Some mixed results but overall pretty happy. We got off to a tremendous start with Isaiah (Levingston) in the 400 hurdles. That's what it's all about, lining it up and competing the way he did, and having fun doing it. VanHootegem added, "Obviously, we earned our way into some finals so we should be pretty active on the last day. We look forward to finishing strong."

The day began with freshman Isaiah Levingston recording a personal-best time in the men's 400-meter hurdles championship section. The freshman finished in 51.93 seconds to take first in his heat and seventh overall. The time is the fastest in the event this season for the Sooners.

OU saw two top-ten finishes in the men's shot put championship section. Freshman Cooper Campbell took seventh with a mark of 57-6.75 (17.55 meters), while sophomore Brad Daboub finished ninth with a throw of 55-9.25 (17.00 meters). Daboub also competed in the collegiate men's discus where he placed 20th, his best throw reaching 145-0 (44.20 meters).

In the women's discus championship section, senior Jess Woodard claimed fourth with a mark of 172-11 (52.72 meters). Sophomore Meia Gordon took seventh, her best throw measuring 164-10 (50.25 meters).

Oklahoma's one victory of the day came from Steven Jazdyk in the collegiate section of the men's pole vault. The senior cleared the bar at 16-2.75 (4.95 meters) to take first in the event. Sophomore Lucas Kelley tied for ninth with a mark of 15-5 (4.70 meters).

The Sooners recorded a top-five finish in the women's triple jump championship section, courtesy of Essence Thomas. The freshman took fourth with a best jump of 40-4.75 (12.31 meters). Competing in the men's long jump championship, senior Thomas Cheval finished eighth, jumping 23-10.75 (7.28 meters). Junior Greg Vann competed in the collegiate section of the men's long jump, recording a best jump of 21-7.25 (6.58 meters).

OU was impressive in the relay competition on day two at the Penn Relays. The Sooners' men's 4x100-meter relay team took second in their heat and eighth overall with a time of 40.88 seconds. The time advances them to tomorrow's Championship of America Invitational at 12:40 p.m. CT.

Running in the 4x200-meter relay, the women's team took first out of all heats, finishing in an impressive time of 1:35.17. The time marks the Sooners' fastest 4x2 relay time this season. They will compete in tomorrow's Championship of America final at 1:25 p.m. CT. After qualifying for today's Championship of America Invitational, the OU women's 4x1 relay team took sixth, finishing in 45.34 seconds.

The Sooners recorded numerous top-10 finishes in the 100-meter dashes. On the women's side, senior Leya Buchanan won her heat in a time of 11.70 seconds and took fourth overall to qualify for tomorrow's final. In the men's 100-meter dash heats, sophomores Jackson Webb and Xavier Brown placed seventh and eighth, with respective times of 10.62 and 10.63 seconds to qualify for tomorrow's championship section.

Competing in the women's 100-meter hurdles, Camri Austin took second in her heat in a time of 13.78 seconds. The freshman placed seventh out of all heats and advances to tomorrow's final at 2:15 p.m. CT. Sophomore Bryce Douglas finished 21st in the men's 110-meter hurdles, finishing in 14.63 seconds.

The third and final day of Penn Relays begins on Saturday at 8 a.m. CT with the collegiate men's triple jump. The meet will conclude with the Championship of America 4x400-meter relays scheduled to finish at 5 p.m. CT.
