Sooners Head To Austin For Texas Relays

NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma track and field team begins competition Thursday at the 91st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays built by The Home Depot. Held Wednesday-Saturday at Mike A. Meyers Stadium in Austin, the historic meet will feature over 7,000 student-athletes and just under 200 college/university teams.

The 91st annual Texas Relays kick off Wednesday with the decathlon and heptathlon. The first event featuring OU competitors will be Thursday morning with Ashley Bryant and Lauren Jones participating in the women's hammer throw at 11 a.m. CT.

Competition will continue for the Sooners through Saturday afternoon with the final event of the meet, the men's 4x400-meter relay, scheduled to begin around 5 p.m. CT at the conclusion of the high school and women's relay races.

Notable events on the weekend include freshman high jumper Vernon Turner's outdoor debut in the collegiate men's high jump on Saturday at 2:45 p.m. CT and sophomore Gabby Kearney beginning her outdoor season in the women's javelin at 11:30 a.m. Friday. Other notable qualifiers include senior Jess Woodard competing in the women's discus and shot put, fellow senior Ashley Bryant in the women's hammer throw, and the men's and women's 4x1 relay teams who have each notched a victory to begin this outdoor season.

OU returns to action after competing at the Aztec Invitational last weekend in San Diego. The Sooners recorded seven event victories, highlighted by Jess Woodard's discus title with a school-record throw of 187-5 (57.13 meters). The women's team begins the first few weeks of the outdoor season ranked 17th, according to the United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association's preseason rankings released on March 20. The next rankings release will be Monday, April 2, following the conclusion of this weekend's track and field competition across the country.

Live coverage from the Texas Relays will be available through ESPN3 and Longhorn Network Thursday (6-8 p.m.), Friday (9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; 7-8:30 p.m.), and Saturday (1:30-5:30 p.m.).
