NORMAN - One day after completing the best season of his five-year Sooner career,
Everette Favor has been named the Co-Big 12 Scholar Athlete of the Year for men's track and field, the Big 12 office announced Thursday
Favor finished his OU competition career last night at the NCAA Outdoor Championship in Eugene, Ore. A pole vaulter, he cleared the first bar at 16-10.75, then missed on three attempts at the next height to finish 18th in the competition.
Favor had an undergraduate GPA in petroleum engineering of 3.34. After graduating in August 2016, Favor began graduate school in human relations in the fall and just finished a second semester of 4.00 graduate work.
The Big 12 Conference established its Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award in 2012-13. A recipient is named in each conference-sponsored sport. Every Big 12 institution nominates one individual per sport with the winners selected by a vote of the league head coaches for that sport and they are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. Scholar-Athlete of the Year nominees must be a junior or senior (athletic and academic standing), have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher, participate in at least 60 percent of the team's scheduled contests and have a minimum of one year in residence at the institution.
After battling back from injuries, Favor closed his career with his best year ever. He advanced to the NCAA Championships after finished 12th at the West prelims. He finished third at the Big 12 Outdoor with a PR of 17-11.00. He matched or tied his previous outdoor PR three times before the Big 12 meet.
He finished sixth in the Big 12 Indoor. He won or tied four meets during the indoor season. He established an indoor PR with a 17-6.50 at the J.D. Martin Invitational. He ranks sixth on the outdoor all-time list and is ninth on indoor all-time list.
“It's a tremendous honor for Everette and for the OU track and field program," says head coach
Jim VanHootegem. "Knowing that there are a lot of deserving people, I understand what a big honor it is. At the same time, we also know how deserving Everette is in terms of the type of student he is, and his athletic performance speaks for itself.
" What people don't know is what a great teammate he is. I think that is just a great, fitting end to his career. Everette has been a huge part of our program and I think the effect he has had on our program will carry forward. This is something that will go in the record books forever, so a good way to immortalize his career at OU.”
