SACRAMENTO, Calif. - While the collegiate season ended two weeks ago, several current and former Sooners are competing here in the USA Track and Field national championships. The meet opened Thursday and runs through Sunday. At stake are positions on a variety of USATF competition teams.
Senior-to-be Jessica Woodard finished 13th in the discus with a throw of 169-11. She had a legal throw on her first attempt, then fouled on her next two and did not advance to the eight-person final. She will compete in the shot put Saturday at 12:30 pm CT.
Former distance runner Biya Simbassa, running for American Distance Project, finished fourth in the 10,000 with a 29:03.48. He started the 24-man race in 11th and eventually moved up to second by the 6400-meter mark. He ran with the leaders awhile before dropping back. In seventh with 8,400 meters to run, he rallied for his final placement.
Former Sooner GA Johnny Crain, running for ZAPF Fitness Reebok, finished 19th with a 30:10.20.
Another former middle distance runner for OU, Patrick Casey, who runs for NIKE, finished 18th in the first round of the 1500. He finished fifth in his heat with a 3:43.18 and missed by two spots getting an auto qualifier from the heat.
On the women's side, former four-time All-American Toni Smith, competing unattached, was seventh in the triple jump with a 43-5.25. She got a final-qualifying mark on her second jump then improved that mark on her third attempt to head into the final round of jumps ranked seventh. She improved her mark but not her placement with her fifth jump and fouled on her fourth and sixth attempts.
Former sprinter Candyce McGrone, competing unattached, finished 19th in the 100 prelims. She missed qualifying for the semifinals by .02.
Highlighting the Friday schedule will be the men's triple jump set for 8:30 p.m. It will feature recently completed Hayden McClain and former Sooner Will Claye. The two rank 1-3 on the all-time OU list with Claye first at 56-4.75 and McClain third at 54-8.00.

Other events today featuring Sooners include the men's steeplechase at 7:45 p.m. It includes Dylan Blankenbaker, the current school record holder at 8:31.17, and Brandon Doughty, running for ZAPF Fitness Reebok, the former standard holder with an 8:38.35. Nine runners advance to the final.
Simbassa returns to the track to run the 5,000-meter final and he will be joined in the race by former Sooner Riley Masters, running for NIKE. Masters owns the school record in the 1500.
On Saturday, McGrone is entered in the first round of the 200 at 2:15 p.m. Woodard has the shot put at 2:30 p.m. and Baileh Simms will compete in the triple jump at 2:45 p.m.
On Sunday, Claye is scheduled for the long jump at 2:10 p.m. The semifinal for the women's 200 is at 2:20 p.m. and the final is set for 4:43 p.m. The men's steeplechase final is scheduled for 4:16 p.m. Because of excessive heat in the Sacramento area, times are subject to change
