Sooners Finish First Round in Eighth Place

NORMAN –The No. 22 Oklahoma women's golf team is tied for eighth place at the end of the first round of the Clemson Invitational. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is taking place at the par-72, 6,253-yard Reserve Golf Club at Lake Keowee in Sunset, S.C.
The Sooners shot a 297 (+9) on Friday against a 17-team field that features five squads in the top 25 of the GolfStat rankings.
No. 8 Furman sits atop the team leaderboard at 285 (-3) followed by Michigan State currently sitting in second place at 288 (E). No. 5 Florida is in third place at 289 (+1), and Texas and No. 4 Florida State are tied for fourth place at 291 (+3).
Junior Ana Ruiz paces OU after firing a 72 (E) in the first round to hold a share of 15th place among 94 competitors. Ruiz played bogey-free for 14 holes and carded one birdie.
Julienne Soo and Hannah Wood each totaled a 74 (+2) on the first 18 holes and hold a piece of 29th place. Wood pocketed two birdies on the day and Soo played bogey-free for 14 holes while sinking a birdie on the final hole.
Junior Valerie Tanguay shot a 77 (+5) in the opening round and shares 64th place. Tanguay joined teammate Wood in also recording two birdies on the day. Classmate Rylee Pedigo shares 87th place at 81 (+9).
"It was one of the toughest rounds we've played in a long time," said head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. "The conditions were tough all day but we finished solid and kept our round going. The forecast looks great for the rest of the week so we will have plenty of opoortunities to climb up the leaderboard."
The second round of the Clemson Invitational is scheduled for Saturday morning, and the Sooners' tee times are set to begin at 9:15 a.m. CT. Live stats will be available on GolfStat.com.
