NORMAN — While most of the University of Oklahoma track and field teams will be in Austin, Texas, for the 90th annual Texas Relays Friday and Saturday, the Sooners will be sending five distance runners west to Stanford, Calif., for the Stanford Invitational held at Cobb Track and Angell Field.
Unlike the four-day schedule in Texas, OU's entries will only be competing Friday evening.
Jacob Burcham and Dylan Blankenbaker will be running in the 5,000-meter run at 9:45 p.m. and 10:03 p.m. CT, respectively.
Emma Dahl will be making her debut as a Sooner in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 7:32 p.m.
“We are really excited about that,” says head coach Jim VanHootegem. “We have high hopes for Emma. We are very impressed with her credentials, going back to what she did in the Sun Belt Conference. We just want her to line up and compete. We have a good feeling about Emma and we are looking forward to her running Friday.”
Finishing off OU's participation will be Elena Arriaza and Isabella Rose, who are entered in the 10,000-meter run, scheduled for 12:05 a.m.
The Stanford Invitational provides an excellent opportunity for distance runners to record results and gain standing in their specific events, making these races all the more significant.
“Generally, qualifying for the NCAA West Preliminary isn't a goal. It should be something that happens in our season. Our goals are to improve week to week and to perform at our highest level. Through that, qualifying marks will come. It's not a goal. It's a consequence of doing things.
“However, you have to race for that to happen. On our schedule, outside of the Stanford Invitational, we don't have any meets that have a 10,000-meter race until the Penn Relays. We have to seek these opportunities outside of our normal schedule because longer races aren't held very often. The race and the results can often be tactical as opposed to time based. We need to give our student-athletes an opportunity to run a good time in the early part of the season. This is the best opportunity for that.”
Live results can be accessed at Record Timing. FloTrack will be streaming the meet, but will require a subscription. A recap will be posted at the end of competition on Soonersports.com, and updates will be posted throughout the evening on Twitter and Facebook (OU_Track).
