EUGENE, Ore. – Julia Reedy finished 16th with a 206-4 in her first trip to the U.S. Olympic Trials at historic Hayward Field. By comparison, she finished fourth in the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June with a 213-5.00.
She also had a 215-1.00 to finish third in the NCAA West Prelims and took third in the Big 12 this year with a 203-2.00. She set the OU school record with her first competition of her senior year, throwing 219-2.00 at the 2016 Baldy Castillo Invitational. She also added the hammer title at the Texas Relays.
Reedy was a two-time first-team All-American in the hammer, earning both awards on Hayward Field in 2015 and 2016. She has scored in the event the last two years in the Big 12 Outdoor Championship.
Activity really ramps up on Thursday as six former and current Sooners will compete. Tia Brooks and Jess Woodard start things off with the qualifying round of the shot put at 11 a.m. PDT. Brooks competed in the London Olympics in the shot. Brooks was a seven-time All-American for the Sooners and celebrated four NCAA Championships, doubling in the indoor and outdoor shot put in 2012 and 2013. She owns the indoor and outdoor school record in the shot. Woodard moved up to second on the all-time career list with a 58-8 on her way to a third-place finish in the shot at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Hayward Field in June. Woodard, a junior-to-be, is a two-time All-American, earning honors in indoor and outdoor shot put this past season and has scored in the Big 12 in outdoor shot put the last two seasons.
The finals for the shot are set for 6:15 p.m. Thursday.

Brittany Borman, another former Sooner who competed in the 2012 Olympics, will compete in the qualifying round of the javelin at 3:30 p.m. The final for the javelin is Saturday at 4 p.m. Borman was a five-time All-American, including three consecutive in the javelin. She won two NCAA titles in the javelin and four Big 12 titles, two in javelin and two in discus.
Brooks and Borman are ranked second in their events among the qualifiers.
At 5:30 p.m., Rakieem “Mookie” Salaam will be on the track in the qualifying for the men's 200. Salaam owns four school records including the mark in the 200. He won the NCAA Indoor in the 200 in 2011. He was a seven-time All-American as a Sooner. The semifinal for the 200 is on Friday at 5:37 with the final scheduled for 5:42 at Saturday.
Luke Bryant, who last competed for OU in 2012, will be in the discus qualifying at 6 p.m. He is throwing in the second fllight out of the fifth position. Bryant, the school record holder in the discus with a 205-8, was an All-American in 2012. He won Big 12 titles in the discus in 2009 and 2012. The final for the discus is Friday at 3:30 p.m.
Toni Smith was a four-time All-American for the Sooners and she will compete in the triple jump final Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Smith finished seventh in the triple jump qualifying earlier in the week with a with a 44-10.25 and is one of 12 to advance to the final. Another former Sooner, Jasmine Simmons, finished 21st in the long jump with a 19-5.25 earlier in the Trials. Simmons was a two-time All-American for the Sooners in the triple jump in 2010 and 2011.
Frezer Legesse is the final runner with Sooner ties to compete Thursday. He will run in the qualifying round for the 1,500 at 7:21 p.m. Legesse was a key runner on Sooner relays, especially the distance medley relay, where he earned All-America honors in 2012. The semifinal for the 1,500 is set for Friday at 4:12 p.m. and the final will be run on Sunday at 5:20 p.m.
Two Sooners will compete in the Canadian Olympic Trials beginning Thursday. Leya Buchanan, who will be a junior at OU next year, will run in the senior women's 100- and 200-meter dash qualifying rounds on Thursday. The 100 race is at noon Thursday with the 200 qualifying round at 7:15 p.m. The Canadian Trials are being held in Edmonton, Alberta.
The 100 semifinals and final are set for Saturday. The 200 semifinals and final are scheduled for Sunday. Buchanan's career bests are 11.49 in the 100 and 23.67 in the 200. Both were set during the 2016 season.
Charles Nguyen, who will be a senior when the next school year starts, will compete in the hammer on Sunday. He has scored every year in the Big 12 in the hammer. His career best in the hammer is 201-9.50, a mark he recorded in 2015.
