EDMONTON, Alberta – The final day of qualifying in the Canadian Olympic Trials at Foote Field brought split results for the Sooners who were competing. And in another part of the qualifying world, a former Sooner got great news.
Senior-to-be Charles Nguyen, competing for St. Thomas Legion, won the hammer title at the Canadian Trials with a 195-10. He had two legal throws in the competition, making the best of the opportunity. However, Nguyen, who calls St. Thomas, Ontario, home, will not be traveling to Rio for the Olympics as he had not met the Olympic standard for the hammer, 252-7.0. His career best in the hammer is 201-9.50.
Junior-to-be Leya Buchanan finished 16th in the qualifying round of the 200 with a 24.95. Buchanan, who calls Mississauga, Ontario, home, had taken a career best of 23.67, recorded during the collegiate season at the Battle on the Bayou, into the competition. The qualifying standard for the 200 is 23.20.
In another part of North America and in another qualifying setting, former Sooner Brittany Borman, who competed for Nike/New York Athletic Club, was added to the U.S. Team in the javelin. She had finished fourth Saturday afternoon in the final with a 185-8, just over four feet behind the third-place mark. Her result in the qualifying round, 190-6.00, would have earned her a spot on the team.
Borman had met the qualifying standard, 203-5.00, and had a best of 210-8.00 entering the competition. That combo provided her a ticket to the 2016 Games, her second consecutive trip. The second-place finisher, Hannah Carson of Texas Tech, had a 190-11 in the finals for the silver and had a qualifying best of 200-9 entering the competition. She recorded a 182-8.00 in the qualifying round. Since none of those marks met the 203-5 standard, her place on the team will be taken by Borman.
The three Olympians with Sooner ties, Borman, hurdler Ronnie Ash and triple jumper Will Claye will begin competition in Rio during the second week of the Games. Claye will compete in the qualifying round on Monday, Aug. 15, and the final is scheduled for Aug. 16. Ash also will start with the qualifying round of the 110-meter hurdles on Monday, Aug. 15. The semifinal is set for Aug. 16 and the final is Aug. 17. Borman will begin competition in the javelin on Tuesday, Aug. 16. The final in the javelin is scheduled for Aug. 18.
