Shell Finishes Fifth at Junior Nationals

CLOVIS, Calif. - Mackenzie Shell passed on the first three heights, then cleared her final attempt at 13-3.50 to finish fifth at the USA Track and Field Junior Championships in Clovis, Calif., Sunday night.
Shell missed three attempts at 13-7.50 to end her competition on the final day of the meet at Veteran's Memorial Stadium.
The US Junior Championship serves as a qualifier for the International Association of Athletics Federation World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, July 19-24.
The top five finishers at the junior championship all cleared the IAAF standard, probably leaving Shell on the sideline for the World U20.
For Shell, it was a magical freshman campaign. She set the OU indoor school record at the J.D. Martin Invitational, the Sooners' indoor home opener in January. She recorded a 14-0.50, the third-best mark in the country at the time, and set the tone for a strong year. She finished the indoor season as a first team All-American after improving her program record in her NCAA Championships debut, finishing seventh with a 14-1.25.
The Port Huron, Mich., native's success continued into the outdoor season as she remained one of the top pole vaulters in the country. Shell took control of the outdoor school record, once again on OU's home turf. She posted an OU-best 14-5.50 at the John Jacobs Invitational in April that advanced her to her first NCAA regional.
