AMES, Iowa – The No. 9/8 Oklahoma softball team (41-7, 12-1 Big 12) closed out a three-game sweep of Iowa State (19-29, 1-11) with a 12-1 win over the Cyclones Sunday afternoon.
Oklahoma's win streak now stands at 16 games, tied for the eighth longest in program history. It's the longest streak for OU since winning 16 straight from April 19 to May 23 in 2014. Oklahoma has also won 23 of its past 24 contests.
The Sooners have 27 in a row over Iowa State and 14 straight in Ames. It's OU's third longest active streak over another team behind Wichita State (32) and North Texas (28). The Sooners have held Iowa State to two runs or less in 21 straight games.
On the weekend, OU outscored ISU 24-4. The Sooners posted a slash line (AVG/OBP/SLG) of .344/.442/.505, while the Cyclones' line was just .203/.268/.270. The OU pitching staff gave up just two unearned runs in 21.0 innings for a 0.67 earned run average. Conversely, Iowa State pitchers allowed 20 earned runs for a 6.67 ERA.
Four different Sooners had multi-hit games Sunday, including a career-high three hits from freshman Fale Aviu. Erin Miller, Sydney Romero and Macey Hatfield each had two hits.
Freshman Jayden Chestnut got the start and win as she improved to 8-0 this season. In 4.0 scoreless innings she gave up just two hits and one walk. She faced the minimum through three innings and a double play helped erase a leadoff double in the second.
Fellow freshman Brittany Finney earned the save, the first of her career and the first by a Sooner this season. Finney gave up one unearned run in 3.0 innings of relief with one hit and three walks allowed and one strikeout.
In the second inning, freshman Caleigh Clifton extended her on-base streak to 22 consecutive games with a walk to start the second. It would be one of a career-high three walks for Clifton in the game. Aviu then singled up the middle, while sophomore Nicole Pendley drew a walk of her own to fill the bases. Hatfield, making her first career start in left field, then put the Sooners on the board with a sacrifice fly to left-center.
Oklahoma then padded its lead with four more runs in the top of the fourth.
Hatfield singled to left field with one out, and sophomore Lea Wodach hit a chopper to Nychole Antillon at short. Antillon went to second base to try to get the force out, but her throw was high and skipped into right field, allowing Hatfield to advance to third.
With runners on the corners, including pinch runner Raegan Rogers at first, senior Paris Townsend entered as a pinch hitter and hit a chopper past Antillon at shortstop. Hatfield scored on the play to make it 2-0, while Rogers moved up to third.
Miller came to bat next and put down a perfect squeeze bunt to plate Rogers from third. Romero followed with a line drive to third, but Sally Woolpert's attempt to double off Miller at first got away and sophomore Kelsey Arnold, who re-entered for Townsend, was able to move up to third on the error.
After a steal of second by Miller to put a pair into scoring position, freshman Shay Knighten hit a hard grounder that went between the legs of Antillon for Iowa State's third error of the inning. Both Miller and Arnold scored on the play, pushing the lead to 5-0.
Three more runs for Oklahoma in the sixth put the run-rule into effect.
Miller led off by pulling a single through the right side, while Romero added a single of her own which allowed Miller to move up to third. An RBI groundout from Knighten brought home Miller, while later in the inning Aviu hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring pinch runner Kady Self. After Aviu's sac fly, Pendley walked and Hatfield hit a run-scoring single up the middle to extend the lead to 8-0.
Iowa State scored an unearned run in the sixth on a fielder's choice groundout, but OU came back with four more runs in the seventh as Knighten and Clifton hit back-to-back homers.
Miller walked and Romero singled to begin the inning before Knighten connected on a 1-1 pitch to right-center. It was her team-leading 10th homer of the season. Two pitches later, Clifton launched her third home run of the season to straight away center. It was the first time this season that OU hit back-to-back home runs.
Oklahoma plays its final non-conference game of the season Wednesday at Tulsa at 6 p.m. It's the third attempt for the Sooners and Golden Hurricane to meet after the first two matchups were rained out.
