Reedy Takes Meet, Bryant Gets a Pair of PRs

NORMAN - Great things can happen when you finally compete in your own back yard.

Several Sooners proved that Friday as the track and field teams opened the first day of the 47th John Jacobs Invitational by posting meet wins and PRs.

Julia Reedy, in dominating fashion, won her second consecutive John Jacob's title in the hammer throw, the lone collegiate event scheduled for Friday. Reedy recorded a 206-11.25 to win by nearly as the only competitor to pass the 200-foot mark.

"I think the case with Julia was that she had a really nice warm up throw and thought 'today could be the big day' and kind of pressed a little bit.," said head coach Jim VanHootegem. "Although, I did make note that a year ago we were celebrating because she threw 63 meters and broke the school record, and now she looks at a 63-meter throw as 'I didn't get that one' so that's the frustration sometimes of being an elite athlete."

It was Ashley Bryant's performance, however, that left coaches particularly impressed. After opening with a foul, the sophomore recorded back-to-back PRs to finish second on the day and jump to 24th, depending on other results, on the NCAA qualifying list with a 198-7.25 mark. Heading into the meet, Bryant's top mark was 185-11.00.

"We are just super pleased with Ashley,"  the third-year head coach said. "Not only did she have a great PR, but she had three good throws. I thought that her third round throw really looked good techincally and showed somebody that is really figuring out the event."

Bryant's mark moves her to third on OU's all-time list behind Reedy and Sarah Tolson, who finished fourth with a mark of 191-4.00.

"Those three do a good job of training together and do a good job competing together," said VanHootegem. "Starting off the meet with a one, two and four gives us a great start and we want to win this meet."

On the men's side, Charles Nguyen was the lone OU competitor in the hammer throw. Nguyen, who improved on each of his legal throws, finished fourth on a 188-7.75 effort.

Action resumes Saturday at 10 a.m. with the women's javelin. Running events begin at 12:15 p.m. with the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Live results are available at CFPI Timing throughout the day with a full recap to be posted on SoonerSports.com at the conclusion of competition.
