OU TRACK BRINGS SMILES AT EISENHOWER

April 18, 2016 | Track and Field

Running, jumping and throwing are the usual focus this time of the year for the Oklahoma track and field teams, now in week six of the outdoor season. However, amid practice, preparation and competition, Sooner student-athletes find time to share with some of their youngest supporters.

OU track and field's longstanding relationship with Norman's Eisenhower Elementary is valuable to more than the elementary students who spend their weekdays cutting out shapes, playing with building blocks and learning to read. Senior team leaders Brandon Doughty and Will Hogston share their time on engaging with the students in Miranda Steward's first-grade class and they are there nearly every week.

The Sooners are more than a mere presence in the classroom as they fully participate in learning activities - that means sitting on the alphabet rug, crossing their legs and getting ready for story time.

As the season rolls on and the Sooners prepare for their own stories on the track, the classroom doors at Eisenhower Elementary were graciously opened to show just how special the team's relationship with the students is.

The Sooner track and field teams would like to invite the students from Eisenhower Elementary and all Norman elementary schools to come out for the "Kids Fun Run" on Saturday, April 23, during the John Jacobs Invitational. Elementary-level students will have a chance to run on the track, watch the Sooners compete in their lone home meet of the outdoor season and say farewell to the 15 OU track and field seniors, including their two special Sooner friends.
