Sooners Start Strong at Clemson Invitational

NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma women's golf team fired a 289 (+1) in the opening round of the Clemson Invitational to share sixth place. The 14-team event is being played at the par-72, 6,253-yard Reserve at Lake Keowee course in Sunset, S.C.
Five strokes determine the difference between the Sooners and tournament leader No. 8 Florida (-4). Houston is in second place at 285 (-3) and Michigan State is in third at 288 (E).
Ana Ruiz paced the Sooners on the day, pocketing five birdies en route to a 70 (-2), which matches her career-best 18-hole score. The sophomore is tied for seventh place.
Classmate Rylee Pedigo is tied for 18th place at 72 (E). Pedigo was at 2-over on the day before birdying two of her final four holes for the even-par finish.
OU sophomore Hannah Wood logged a 73 (+1) and shares 28th place, and freshman Julienne Soo is tied for 35th place at 74 (+2). Soo sat at 5 strokes over par with five holes remaining before tallying birdies on three of those holes.
Sophomore Valerie Tanguay is tied for 60th place at 76 (+4).
Oklahoma's Karen Arimoto is playing as an individual in the tournament and is unattached from team scoring. The freshman posted a 75 (+3) in the opening round and is tied for 45th place.
"We played really well as a team today," OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell said. "I'm really proud of the way the girls fought all day."
