NORMAN – Behind below-par rounds from sophomore duo Hannah Wood and Rylee Pedigo, the University of Oklahoma women's golf team sits in fourth place after the first round of the Clover Cup. The 17-team tournament is being played at the par-72, 6,184-yard Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.

The Sooners fired a 290 (+2) on the day and are four strokes behind tournament-leader TCU. SMU (285; -3) is in second place, while South Florida rounds out the top three at 288 (E).

Wood paced the Sooners in the first round, tallying a 68 (-4). Wood posted her only bogey of the day on hole No. 6 but countered with five birdies over the next 12 holes for her 11th par-or-better round and third sub-70 round of the season. The sophomore is in sole possession of third place and is just one stroke off the tournament leaders.

Pedigo carded an opening-round 71 (-1) and is tied for seventh place. The sophomore pocketed three birdies on the day, including one on her last hole, and eagled hole No. 15 for the under-par round.

Sophomore Ana Ruiz logged a 75 (+3) in the opening round and is tied for 34th place, and Karen Arimoto, a freshman, is tied for 41st with a 76 (+4). OU's Valerie Tanguay shares 49th place at 77 (+5).

Freshman Julienne Soo is playing as an individual in the event and is unattached from team scoring. Soo shot a 66 (+6) in the opening round and is tied for 70th place.

“I'm really proud of the way we finished today,” OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell said. “We played well coming down the stretch. We are right where we want to be with 36 holes left to play in the tournament.”
