NORMAN – A six-run third inning helped lead No. 13/14 Oklahoma (13-4) to a 9-4 win over Saint Louis (8-8) in the team's opening game at the OU Tournament Friday night at Marita Hynes Field.
Sophomore Lea Wodach was the driving force for an OU offense that pounded out 14 hits and scored at least nine runs for the eighth time this season. She finished the game 3-3 to tie a career high in hits and scored two runs with three RBI and a home run.
Wodach was one five Sooners on the day to collect at least two hits, as she was joined by senior Erin Miller, sophomore Kelsey Arnold and freshmen Fale Aviu and Caleigh Clifton.
Senior Kelsey Stevens earned the win for Oklahoma to improve to 6-2 on the season. She tied a season high with nine strikeouts and allowed four runs on four hits and two walks.
Saint Louis scored the game's opening run in the top of the first, despite not getting a hit.
Leadoff batter Alex Nickel walked and moved up to second on a groundout. She then advanced to third on a wild pitch and came home to score during a wild pitch in the next at-bat.
The Sooners tied it up at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame.
Sophomores Kelsey Arnold and Lea Wodach each singled to extend career-best hitting streaks. Arnold's run now sits at nine games, while Wodach's was extended to 10. After a fielder's choice put runners on the corners, senior Erin Miller pulled a single to the right side and was able to hustle down the line to beat the ball to the bag, driving in Arnold with the tying run.
After a scoreless second, Oklahoma broke the deadlock with a six-run third.
Freshman Sydney Romero led off with a walk before Arnold pick up her second hit of the game. Wodach then drove both in with a double to give OU a 3-1 lead. Freshman Fale Aviu made it 4-1 with an RBI single after Wodach's double.
Later in the inning with runners on second and third, sophomore Nicole Pendley hit a slow roller to first base. Alyssa Tarquinio fielded it and looked to throw home but it was too late to get the runner at the plate. After a steal of second by Pendley, freshman Caleigh Clifton hit a two-run single up the middle to extend the Sooners' lead to 7-1.
The lead grew to 8-1 in the fifth when sophomore Nicole Pendley scored on a groundout, but the Billikens trimmed the deficit to 8-4 after the top of the sixth thanks to a pair of home runs.
Wodach got one of the runs back in the bottom of the frame as she led off with a solo shot to center field. It was her team-leading sixth of the season, and it marked OU's sixth straight game with a home run. In that time, the team has hit 12 home runs.
