OU Finishes Spring-Opening Round in Fourth

NORMAN – The Oklahoma women's golf team sits in fourth place after the opening round of the Hurricane Invitational. The 16-team event is being played at the par-71, 6,080-yard Biltmore Golf Course in Miami, Fla.
OU registered a 288 (+4) in the round and is 11 strokes off No. 7 Northwestern, who holds the top spot in the field with a 277 (-7). No. 16 Iowa State is in second place at 281 (-3), and recording a 285 (+1), South Florida finished the first round in third place.
“We played solid today as a team,” OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell said. “The conditions got tough on our back nine, but we held our round together. These girls have all been working hard over the winter break and it's showing out on the course. We have a lot of golf left and we need to play our own game, one shot at a time and one hole at a time.”
Hannah Wood paced the Sooners on the day, carding a 70 (-1) to share eighth place out of 90 competitors. Wood's opening day, which featured three birdies, marks her ninth par-or-better round of the season.
Freshman Karen Arimoto made her career debut in the OU lineup and is tied for 19th place after pocketing four birdies en route to a 72 (+1). The 72 is Arimoto's career best, topping her previous best of 74, shot in the final round of the season-opening Schooner Fall Classic.
OU's Valerie Tanguay shared 19th place with Arimoto. The sophomore made the turn at 2 over par before birdying the first and last hole of the back nine to finish at 72 (+1).
Sophomores Rylee Pedigo and Ana Ruiz both posted a 74 (+3) in the opening round and are tied for 35th place.
The Sooners tee off for round two of the Hurricane Invitational at 7:10 a.m. CT from hole No. 1 with Tulane and Minnesota. Live stats from the tournament are available at GolfStat.com.
