| The all-time series between Oklahoma and Washington is now tied 11-11 ... senior pitcher Kelsey Stevens made her 70th career start, taking sole possession of 10th place in Oklahoma history ... freshman Sydney Romero collected her first career hit and RBI with a two-run double in the first ... freshman Caleigh Clifton made her Sooners debut by starting at second base and Jayden Chestnut also made her debut in relief |
LAS VEGAS – In its history, the No. 9/8 Oklahoma softball team had never faced as daunting a start to a season as it has in 2016. After losing in walk-off fashion to No. 14/13 Minnesota, 1-0, earlier in the day, OU lost to No. 20/19 Washington, 10-3, in the nightcap Friday at the Sportco Kickoff Classic in Las Vegas.
It was the first time in program history that the Sooners began a season with two straight games against ranked teams.
Things looked promising early on for Oklahoma. After being shut out in its season opener, OU (0-2) jumped out for two runs in the bottom of the first against UW (2-0).
Freshman Fale Aviu was hit by a pitch and moved up to second when sophomore Nicole Pendley singled to left field. That brought freshman Sydney Romero to the plate and she picked up her first career hit and RBI with a double to center field.
As Aviu scored, the throw from Huskies centerfielder Julia DePonte got past UW catcher Kimberlee Souza. As a result of the error on Souza, Pendley was able to also score and Romero was able to move up to third base.
Washington cut the lead in half in the top of the second as Souza atoned for her error with a long solo home run to left center.
After a scoreless third, Souza struck again for the Huskies with her second homer of the game. The blast to left field came with two on, giving Washington the 4-2 lead.
The Huskies tacked on three more runs in the fifth thanks to an RBI double by Courtney Gano and a two-run homer by Casey Stangel.
The offensive output continued for UW in the seventh as Gano delivered another RBI hit and DePonte brought home two with a double.
Oklahoma got one run back in the bottom of the seventh as senior Erin Miller drew a bases-loaded walk, but the Sooners couldn't get any closer.
Senior Kelsey Stevens got the start in the circle for Oklahoma, her first since starting against Utah Valley on May 2 of last year. It was also the 70th start of her OU career, breaking a tie with Jennifer Sherman (1992-95) for 10th place in OU history.
Stevens pitched well for the first three innings Friday, giving up just one hit and one walk, but after walking two of the first three batters she faced in the fourth, she was pulled. Stevens finished with two strikeouts in 3.1 innings and gave up only one hit, but she walked three and gave up three runs in taking the loss.
Sophomore Paige Parker, who threw a complete game against Minnesota earlier in the day, took to the circle for the next 1.1 innings, giving up three runs on three hits.
That prompted another pitching change as freshman Jayden Chestnut made her OU debut.
The Mustang, Okla., native threw 2.1 innings to close out the game. She allowed four runs on four hits while allowing one walk and picking up the first two strikeouts of her career.
Oklahoma is back in action Saturday with two games. First, OU faces Lamar at 1:15 p.m. CT before taking on Syracuse at 5:45 p.m. CT.
