LAS VEGAS -- No. 9/8 Oklahoma (1-2) earned its first win of the 2016 season Saturday afternoon with a 12-2, five-inning victory over Lamar (1-2) at the Sportco Kick Off Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. It was the first ever meeting between the Sooners and Cardinals and OU's 23rd straight win over a team from the Southland Conference.
After scoring two runs through its first two games against top-25 teams, the Sooners jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first inning against Lamar.
Freshman Fale Aviu singled to left field to get her first career hit in OU's first at-bat. A follow-up single by sophomore Nicole Pendley and walk to freshman Sydney Romero loaded the bases, and senior Erin Miller's walk brought in the game's first run. Fellow senior Kady Self then reached safely on a fielder's choice, enabling Pendley to score.
Sophomore Lea Wodach doubled Oklahoma's lead with a single to center field, scoring two runs, while freshman Caleigh Clifton earned her first career hit with a run-scoring double to right center.
That would be all the run support sophomore Paige Parker and the OU pitching staff would need.
Parker got her first win of the season as she allowed just two hits and no runs in 3.0 innings of work. She struck out six and allowed just one walk to move to 1-1 on the year. The only trouble she ran into came in the second inning when she allowed a leadoff double and walk, but she battled back with two strikeouts and a groundout to keep the Cardinals off the board.
Thanks to two errors by Lamar and four walks, Oklahoma scored six runs in the third inning on just one hit.
Wodach and Parker drew back-to-back walks to start the frame. Clifton then hit a chopper to shortstop that was misplayed by Lamar's Stephanie Meeuwsen, allowing Wodach to score. Sophomore Kelsey Arnold then walked to load the bases before Aviu drew another walk to make it 8-0 for OU.
Pendley batted next and hit a comebacker to Lamar relief pitcher Lauren Dannelley, who came home with it but her errant throw allowed both Clifton and Arnold to score. Later in the inning, Pendley scored on a wild pitch and Romero grounded out to third base to account for the 10th and 11th Sooner runs of the game, respectively.
Oklahoma's final run of the game came in the fourth inning thanks to Lamar's third error of the contest.
With one out, freshmen Shay Knighten got her first career hit with a single to center field and fellow freshman Kylie Lundberg did the same with a double to left field. Junior Macey Hatfield then hit a grounder to second base that went for an error, allowing Knighten to score.
Freshman Brittany Finney came on her in OU debut to get the final three outs. She surrendered two runs on one hit but did notch the first two strikeouts of her career.
Oklahoma wraps up play Saturday against Syracuse (1-1) at 5:45 p.m. CT.
