McGrone Fourth, Borman to Javelin Final

NORMAN – It has been an interesting time in Beijing, China, for former Sooner All-American Candyce McGrone. She capped off three days of competition on Friday by finishing fourth in the 200-meter dash at the 15th IAAF World Championships.
While McGrone was making her name in the final of the 200, another former Sooner, Brittany Borman, began her competition in the qualifying round of the javelin.
An event that didn't seem to have much of a draw when the competition started on Wednesday in Beijing's National Stadium took a turn for the amazing by Friday as the top five finishers all set a record of some kind.
"It was so close, I don't know what to say right now," McGrone said.
For McGrone, her 22.01 was a personal best. Dafne Schippers of the Netherlands recorded a 21.63 to set a championship record on her way to winning a major title in the 200 for the first time in her career. Elaine Thompson of Jamaica finished second with a PB with a 21.66. Two-time Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown of Jamaica recorded a 21.97, her season best.
The youngest entry in the event, Dina Asher-Smith of Great Britain, who had the fastest semifinal time, finished fifth with a 22.07 to set a national record for her country.
The final in the 200 marked just the second time history for three women to run under 22 seconds. The first time was in the 1988 Olympics and McGrone just missed making it four. She knocked .07 off her previous personal and season best in today's final. She improved her time in the 200 from 22.45 in the qualifying round to 22.26 in the semifinal. Then, another cut in time in today's final.
Earlier this summer, McGrone ran a 22.08 to establish her previous career best time.
McGrone was an All-American in the indoor and the outdoor 200 after winning the NCAA title in the outdoor 100 in 2011. She owns the school records in the indoor 200 (22.84) and the outdoor 100 (11.08) and is ranked third all-time in the outdoor 200.
Borman threw 210-8, the second best mark of her career, on her third and final attempt in the qualifying round to advance to the final on Sunday. Her first throw traveled 191-1, then she fouled on her second attempt and she was looking at the very real possibility that she would not qualify for the final
“It was rough today," Borman said. “My first two throws weren't very good, so I knew on the last one I had to really hit it and relax and just let it go.”
On her final throw, she moved from the bottom of the results to the top spot in her qualifying group. She ended up with the fourth best qualifying mark. The final mark to qualify was a 204-1.
“That was our goal, to come out and make the final. I'd love to make the top three. I'm really excited.”
Borman will be the fourth to throw in the final which is scheduled for Sunday night in Beijing and Sunday at 5:45 a.m. in the central time zone. She has already recorded her personal best during the 2015 season, a 212-5, during a competition in May.
Borman was a two-time NCAA champion while competing for the Sooners, winning titles in 2011 and 2012. She owns the OU school record in the javelin with a 194-11. She was a five-time All-American, earning the award three times in the javelin and twice in the discus. She also won four Big 12 titles, two each in discus and javelin.
This marks her second IAAF world meet and she participated in the London Olympics in 2012.
