Candyce McGrone, who earned All-America honors three times while competing for OU in 2011, has made her first trip to the IAAF World Championships a memorable one. McGrone recorded the second fastest time in qualifying during the heats of the 200-meter at the National Stadium in Beijing today.
Her time of 22.45 advances her to the semifinal which will be run Thursday in Beijing. She is in heat 1 of the semifinals while Dina Asher-Smith of Great Britain, who had the best time in the qualifying round with a 22.22, is in the third heat. The top two in each of three heats and the next two fastest from the semifinal will advance to the final on Friday.
Her PR in the 200 is a 22.08. She was an All-American in the indoor and the outdoor 200 after winning the NCAA title in the outdoor 100 in 2011. She owns the school records in the indoor 200 (22.84) and the outdoor 100 (11.08) and is ranked third all-time in the outdoor 200.
The results weren't so good for three other former Sooners who competed in Beijing today. LaVerne Jones-Ferrette, running for her native Virgin Islands, posted a 23.83 in the 200 prelims to finish 47th out of 51 entries. This marked the fourth world championship performance for the sprinter who was a six-time All-American for OU in 2003-2004. She earned the honors in the indoor 60 and 200 two times each, the outdoor 100 once and the outdoor 200 once.
Will Claye, competing in the first flight of the triple jump, had a best effort of 53-10.25 and failed to advance. This marked Claye's third competition in an IAAF World Championships and is the first time he did not advance to the final round. He finished third in his previous two IAAF meets in the 2011 and 2013. He had recorded a 57-4.25 during the USATF Championships in June to make the Team USA roster.
He won the NCAA title in 2009 in the outdoor triple jump as a true freshman competing for OU. He owns the school record for OU in the indoor (55-1.50) and outdoor (56-4.75) triple jumps. He was a four-time All-American as a Sooner, earning awards in the long jump and triple jump in 2009 and 2010 in both the indoor and outdoor competitions. He added the Big 12 title in the triple jump as a freshman.
The final former Sooner to compete on Wednesday was Ronnie Ash. He was disqualified in his first race in the 110-meter hurdles after a false start. Another former OU All-American, Ash earned the honors in the indoor 60 hurdles and outdoor 110 hurdles in 2010, his only year as a Sooner. He owns the school records in the 60 hurdles (7.55) and the 110 hurdles (13.19) and won Big 12 titles in both of those events.
Brittany Borman (javelin) will be the final former Sooner to compete as her qualifying round in set for Friday evening with the final set for Sunday, Aug. 30.
