Brooks Misses Final by Slimmest Margin

Tia Brooks recorded her only legal throw on her first attempt at the 15th IAAF World Championship in Beijing, China. Unfortunately for the former Sooner, that effort was less than an inch too short and her trip to the world championships came to an end in the qualifying round.
Brooks' legal effort measured 58-1.25 and had her advancing to the championship round until Paulina Gruba of Poland registered a 58-2 on her third and final throw of qualifying.
It was a disappointing result for Brooks who had a previous season best of 62-1.25. That distance would have ranked fifth among the 12 women who qualified for the final. Christina Schwantz of Germany won the title in the competition with a 66-10.
Brooks was the first of five former Sooners to compete in the IAAF World Championships in Beijing's National Stadium.
Will Claye (triple jump) and Ronnie Ash (110 hurdles) open competition on Wednesday in Beijing in qualifying rounds. Candyce McGrone starts her competition in the 200-meter dash later Wednesday. The final for the triple jump and the semifinals for the hurdles and the 200 are set for Thursday night. The finals in the 110-hurdles and the 200 will be held later Friday.
Brittany Borman (javelin) will be the final former Sooner to compete as her qualifying round in set for Friday evening with the final set for Sunday, Aug. 30.
