OU Adds PRs, Shows Consistency in Austin

May 03, 2015 | Track and Field

AUSTIN -- The University of Oklahoma throwers showed consistency while personal records were challenged on the track in the Sooners' last regular season meet of 2015 in Austin today.

“Throughout the year, we've had a lot of outstanding performances,” head coach Jim VanHootegem said. “We had some good performances today. It was a perfect meet for what we were looking for and I feel good about it.”

In the Division I scoring of the meet, the Sooner men were fourth with 79 points while the 23rd-ranked OU women were fifth with 56 points.

In the first event of the day, Julia Reedy and Sarah Tolson placed first and second respectively. The 206-03 mark brought Reedy her third win and fourth top three finish of the season. For Tolson, the finish was her her third top three finish of the season.

“We're just looking for consistency and that's what we went out there to do,” Reedy said. “We got first and second. We competed. I think, overall, we did really well. Conference is where we all want to compete.”

Soon after the hammer throw began, the rest of the field events took off. In the men's javelin throw, Garrett Snow won with a throw of 219-1, and for the women, Liz Herrs had the best mark of the collegiate throwers with 180-3.

Field events took place the duration of the meet, but the Sooners didn't lose momentum. At shot put, Chase Sammons earned his seventh individual win of the season with a mark of 63-1.25. In the men's hammer, Charles Nguyen placed second with a mark of 198-3.

“I think the whole vibe of the meet this week was to get a tune up, get a meet in before finals next week and Big 12s the week after,” Assistant Coach Brian Blutreich said. “We were consistent over the whole squad.”

Meanwhile, on the track several Sooners established PRs and had solid performances. Top finishes for the Sooners included Belle Wallace, who finished third in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:25.62; Malcolm Wankel, who finished fourth with a 1:50.99 and Allan Eke, who finished third in the 1,500 with a 3:45.24.

In the 100-meter dash, Bennie Wesley set a personal record of 10.43 while Leya Buchanan set a PR of 11.46 in the 100-meter dash and added another one in the 200 with a 24.13. Buchanan's time in the 100 also gave her the eighth spot on the career top 10 list.

Mia Mukes set a personal record of 56.74 in the 400-meter dash and Makayla Stephens set a personal best of 14.37 in the 100-meter hurdles.

Lauren Gibbs and Chloe Peek set personal records in the 800-meter run. Gibbs ran a 2:18.45 while Peek ran a 2:21.62 to beat her previous record by almost nine seconds.

The Sooners will go through finals next week and have an open weekend from competition. OU returns to action in the Big 12 Outdoor Championship in Ames, Iowa, May 15-17.
