OU Completes Day One of Pac-12 Challenge

NORMAN – The Sooners battled No. 9 Wisconsin, Iowa and Kansas along with the elements on Saturday, as the wind and the rain made racing conditions less than ideal all day in Kansas City at the Big 12/Big Ten Dual.

Oklahoma took third place over the 14 races with 73 points. Wisconsin won with 142 points, Iowa placed second (112) and Kansas came in fourth (44).

Points were awarded based on what place a team scored during a certain race. The scoring system was weighted, with the first varsity eight race being worth the most points.

In the first seven races, the morning session, OU had a tough head-to-head matchup against a ranked Wisconsin crew. The Crimson and Cream were unable to notch any victories but managed a number of solid performances against the Badgers.

OU's second varsity four crew gave Wisconsin its closest race of the morning, as the Sooner boat finished in 7:44.5 while Wisconsin won the race with a time of 7:36.4. Oklahoma's first varsity eight turned in a mark of 6:43.6 and its second varsity eight crossed the finish line in 6:55.4.

Due to the weather, the teams were forced to change the afternoon format. Instead of OU going head-to-head with Iowa, all four teams raced in each of the seven races to shorten the second session.

Oklahoma posted five third place finishes in the afternoon in the first varsity eight (6:29.2), second varsity eight (6:32.6), first varsity four (7:28.0) second varsity four (7:23.0) and first novice eight (6:52.7).

The Sooners also notched a second place finish in a three-team second varsity eight race with a time of 7:03.9 and came in second in the two-team third varsity four race, crossing the line in 7:44.5.

The Crimson and Cream returns home next weekend for its first and only home regatta of the season, as the Sooners host Tulsa on Saturday, May 2 at 8 a.m. in Oklahoma City at the Boathouse District.
