OU Wins Stone Family Cup Over Tulsa
May 02, 2015 | Rowing
NORMAN -- The Sooner rowing squad placed first in four of the six races in their dual versus intrastate rival Tulsa to capture the Stone Family Cup by a score of 49-37.
A scoring system was formulated to award points based on finishes; however, the majority of points up for grabs are in the first varsity eight and second varsity eight races.
After finishing second in the opening second varsity four race with a mark of 8:00.58, the Sooners captured their first victory of the morning in the third varsity eight race to tie the dual score at 6-6. The OU boat was dominant, posting a time of 7:05.80, nearly 30 seconds faster than the Golden Hurricanes' crew.
Oklahoma kept the momentum going with a first place finish in the first varsity four race. The OU boat crossed the line with a time of 7:42.44 to earn 11 points and give the hosts their first lead of the day at 17-14.
In the next race, the second varsity eight, the Sooners and Golden Hurricanes battled it out in the closest race of the day. The race ended in a photo finished where it was determined to be a dead heat and no points were awarded to either side. Both OU and Tulsa finished with a time of 6:55.37.
Oklahoma capped off the dual in dominant fashion with a victory in the first varsity eight race. The Sooners powered their way to a 6:40.6, topping Tulsa by over 15 seconds, as the Golden Hurricanes crossed the line in 6:56.3. The first varsity eight was the highest point race of the day, as OU earned 32 points to seal the dual victory.
After the first varsity eight there was a non-scored race featuring two OU boats, including one of seniors and a Tulsa lightweight eight. Oklahoma took the top two spots to put an exclamation mark on the successful day of racing.
The Sooners finished Saturday with 49 points, defeating Tulsa by a final of 49-37.
Saturday's dual marks the final regatta of the regular season, as the team's next race is the Big 12 Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn., on May 16 and 17. The Sooners will look to win their third straight Big 12 title and earn a trip back to the NCAA Championships.
