NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma women's golf team finished Friday's opening round of the Big 12 Championship in fifth place. The nine-team tournament is being played at the par-72, 6,333-yard Dominion Country Club in San Antonio, Texas.
The Sooners carded a round-one 295 (+7) and are 13 strokes off tournament leader and No. 20-ranked Baylor (282; -6). Texas Tech is in second place at 289 (+1) and Iowa State rounds out the top three with a 2-over 290.
OU freshmen Rylee Pedigo, Ana Ruiz and Hannah Wood all finished the round at 73 (+1) and are tied for 11th place. Wood collected her only birdie of the day on hole one, while Pedigo and Ruiz pocketed four birdies each in the round.
Sooner freshman Valerie Tanguay and sophomore Alexandra Kaui are tied at 30th place, each recording a round-one 76 (+4). Tanguay struggled on the front nine but fought back with three birdies in the last half of the round. Kaui collected both of her birdies on the back nine.
Sixth-year OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell said she hopes to see her team make strides in the final two rounds of the championship.
“We played pretty well all day. We need to stick to our game plan and play our own games,” Drouin-Luttrell said. “Overall, we're right where we want to be, and we still have a lot of golf left.”
