STILLWATER, Okla. – Playing in her first Bedlam game, freshman Paige Parker dominated in the circle and at the plate as No. 6/5 Oklahoma (40-6, 12-1) took the first game in the series with a 7-1 win Wednesday night over Oklahoma State (19-28, 3-10) in Stillwater.
Parker improved to 21-4 on the year as she struck out eight and gave up just one run and one hit in 5.0 innings. At the plate, she tied a career high with three hits, drove in a pair of runs and scored a run herself.
The win was the 10th straight for Oklahoma over Oklahoma State and the team's 13th win in the past 14 matchups. All-time, OU stands 80-70 against OSU. The 150 games in the series mark the most for Oklahoma against another program, while the 80 wins are also the most against any other school.
OU improved to 40-6 with the victory, reaching 40 wins in the third fewest games in program history. Only 2013 (40-3) and 2007 (40-4) saw the Sooners' get to the 40-win mark faster.
Most importantly, it pushed the Sooners' lead in the Big 12 standings to four games over Baylor and Texas, which both stand at 6-3 in league play.
Oklahoma got the scoring started in the first inning.
Senior Lauren Chamberlain opened the game by drawing a six-pitch walk, one of three walks for her on the evening. Fellow senior Shelby Pendley followed with a single and, two batters later, junior Kady Self walked to fill the bases. On a 2-2 pitch, senior Georgia Casey hit a short popup with top spin that landed short of first base resulting in an RBI groundout.
The Sooners' lead grew in the fourth as OU added on four runs.
With one out, freshman Paige Parker collected her second hit of the game with a chopper up the middle. That brought junior Whitney Ellis to the plate and she drove a 1-1 pitch to dead-center for her second home run of the season. The two-run shot put the Sooners on top 3-0.
Junior Tori Nirschl, batting as a pinch hitter, kept the attack going as she pulled a single down the right field line. Chamberlain came to the plate next and just missed hitting her record-setting 91st career home run. The line drive to right field hit two-thirds of the way up the wall for a long single.
Pendley extended the lead to 4-0 as she sent a single through the left side. Two batters later, Self drew her second walk and once again filled the bases. Casey picked up her second RBI of the game next as she singled to left field, plating Chamberlain.
After three hitless innings, Oklahoma State got its first hit and run when Tiffany Mikkelson hit a leadoff homer to left center. That would be all that Parker would allow, however, as she retired the next six batters she faced.
The Sooners responded two innings later with a pair of runs.
Junior Erin Miller got things started with a leadoff double to left center. Casey walked two batters later before she and Miller moved into scoring position following a groundout to first base. That brought Parker back to the plate and she got her third hit with a comebacker up the middle.
Oklahoma stays in conference play as it travels to Lawrence, Kan., for a three-game series against Kansas. First pitch is Friday night at 5 p.m.
