Outstanding Individual Results Propel OU

NORMAN -- For the second day in a row, the ever changing Oklahoma weather held off until the competition was over and the teams competing in the 46th John Jacobs Invitational took full advantage of the conditions.

The host Sooners led the way with outstanding team and individual results.

“I was pleased with the team from the hammer last night all the way through the 4x4,” head coach Jim VanHootegem said. “Obviously, Julia (Reedy) set a great tone for the team, breaking the school record by two meters (more than nine feet) and having a great series.”

While Reedy may have started the Sooners off strong, Oklahoma's field athletes continued the momentum into today's portion of the meet. In those events, the Sooners claimed six wins overall, five of which happened today.

Liz Herrs won the javelin with a throw of 189-6.75, a mark that should move her to second in the nation in the event when the new rankings. Herrs' mark broke her own meet record, 176-11 set in 2014, and a facility record that had existed for nearly 26 years. That record, 183-1, was set in by Donna Mayhew while competing for the US Olympic Festival's West team.

Senior Alex Morgan won the women's discus throw with 173-9. Her win couldn't have happened on a better day as Oklahoma track and field honored its seniors who were competing for the final time on John Jacobs field at today's meet.

For the men throwers, 10th-ranked Chase Sammons won his third consecutive meet in shot put with 62-10. Javelin thrower Tyler Renton claimed an individual victory with a 227-3.5. Hayden McClain added a meet win for the jumpers with his victory in the men's triple jump. The mark 52-6.5 set a personal record by almost seven inches after leaping 52-6.5. That could move him from 21st to 10th in the country, depending on other results from the weekend.

“It was a great way to see Hayden McClain go out and compete and that's really how we want him to compete,” VanHootegem said. “That was his first time over 16 meters and that's one of the better jumps in the country at this point in time.”

Seven of the 13 individual victories were won on the track. One of the victors, Brandon Doughty, made history in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as he sets a new record with a time of 8:50.96. Doughty's time beat one of the oldest records in OU track and field history, going back to 1975. An All-American in the event in 2014, this was the first time for him to run this event this season.

Brandon Doughty set a meet record in what was essentially a solo effort,” Coach VanHootegem said.

In addition, Eric Graf won the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:01.05.

For the women sprinters, Daye Shon Roberson won the 200-meter dash and set a personal record after clocking a time of 23.22. Roberson has won the 400 in the last two meets in the 400-meter dash. The mark ranks as the fifth best in school history.

Ama Pipi, who normally runs in the 100-meter and 200-meter races, competed in the 400-meter dash to win with a time of 54.47.

Pipi and Roberson joined Daunicia Demersen and Payton Baker to win the women's 4x400-meter with a 3:35.75. The quartet set a season best by more than three seconds and the timr is the seventh best on OU's all time list.

Belle Wallace won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:10.69 while Elena Arriaza won the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:36.37. Just seconds behind her, Bryce Perry came in at third with a time of 4:40.05 and Brittany Tretbar placed fourth in the race with a time of 4:42.88.

A Division I scoring event, the Sooner women finished first with 177 points, 18 points better than second-place Wichita State and 52 points better than Alabama. Missouri State was fourth followed by Abilene Christian, Oklahoma State and North Texas. The Shockers finished first in the men's standing with 183 points, 19 points ahead of the host Sooners. Alabama was third and Abilene Christian finished fourth followed by North Texas and Oklahoma State.

The next competition for OU, the second to last regular season meet, will be at the prestigious and one of the oldest meets in the nation, the 116th Penn Relays in Philadelphia April 23-25.
