Jones, Sammons Lead the Sooners at UCLA

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – In what turned out to be a collegiate dual meet, Erin Jones and Chase Sammons led the Sooner track and field teams to a day filled with impressive performances.

Billed as the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational, OU and UCLA were the only collegiate teams competing but that did not mean the field wasn't packed with outstanding international, club and exhibition competitors. The quality competition brought out the best to date in the Sooners.

A total of 12 season bests for the men and 13 for the women were changed at the meet, the fourth of the season for the Sooners. Another eight first-time season marks were added. Six efforts moved OU athletes up the all-time top 10 lists.

Jones picked up double wins in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Both times, an 11.48 in the 100 and a 24.09 in the 200, were season bests for the fifth-year senior.

Sammons continued his consistency in the discus and the shot put, winning both events for the second consecutive week. His 63-8.25 in the shot put tied him for second all-time in school history and was his fifth consecutive meet to throw better than 61 feet. His 186-3 in the discus moved him to sixth all-time.

Daye Shon Roberson won the 400-meter dash for the second consecutive week and continued to improve her time, dropping it to 53.10. That moved her into a tie for fourth place on the top 10 career list. Bryce Perry, also a winner for the second week in a row, dropped another 18 seconds off her 3,000-meter steeplechase time. She moved into second place on the all-time top 10 list.

Garrett Snot The women in the discus joined in the re-writing efforts. Jess Woodard won the discus with a career-best effort of 173-0. That mark moved her into fifth place on the career top 10 list. Alex Morgan finished second with a season-best 171-9.00. Kate Foster took third with a career best of 170-2.00 and moved into sixth place on the career list.

Other event winners for the Sooners included Liz Herrs in the javelin with a season-best 179-8; Garrett Snow in the men's javelin with a season-best 226-10; Trae Armstrong with a 10.45 in the 100, a season best; Hayden McClain with a season-best 51-4.50 in the triple jump; the men's 4x400-meter relay, made up by Scott Petersen, Jacob Goldberg, Malcolm Wankel and Allen Eke; and the women's 4x400-meter relay, made up by Mia Mukes, Roberson, Payton Baker and Daunicia Demerson.

UCLA won both duals, outscoring the Sooner men 99-46 and the OU women 104-52.

After four weeks on the road, the Sooners return home to host the 46^th John Jacobs Invitational next weekend. The meet will be the only home event of the outdoor season for OU. The high school portion of the meet will fill most of the day Friday. The collegiate hammer throw is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday, then the rest of the week fills the day on Saturday. Also on Saturday the Sooners will honor their seven seniors, Alex Deir, Hunter Heaton, Jones, Morgan, Landon Sharp, Abbabiya Simbassa and Wankel.
