LUBBOCK, Texas – An 11-run fifth inning aided No. 6/6 Oklahoma (28-5, 3-0 Big 12) as it completed a three-game sweep of Texas Tech (16-20, 0-3 Big 12) with a 21-6, five-inning win on Sunday afternoon.
The 21 runs were the second most OU has ever scored against a Big 12 team. The only higher run total was the 24 scored against Iowa State on April 26, 2013. Oklahoma has scored 20 or more runs three times this season. Prior to 2015, the team had only scored 20 or more runs five times in program history and never more than once in a season.
Oklahoma scored in 15 of 18 innings this weekend en route to outscoring the Red Raiders, 43-12, in the three-game sweep. OU has won 10 straight in the series, outscoring TTU, 98-21, in that span. The team's 46-7 (.868) all-time mark in the series is its best winning percentage against another Big 12 team.
Four different OU hitters had at least two hits, led by freshman Nicole Pendley going 4-4 with three RBI to set a career high in hits. In addition to the 15 hits, Oklahoma drew eight walks and had five batters hit by a pitch.
Senior Lauren Chamberlain hit a grand slam in the fifth inning, moving her into a tie for second place on the all-time home run list with Arizona's Stacie Chambers (2008-11) with 87 career home runs. It was Chamberlain's fifth career grand slam, and she is now three home runs away from tying the all-time mark of 90.
Junior Kady Self went 2-4 with a two-run homer and finished with four runs batted in. Fellow junior Erin Miller was 2-3 with two runs scored and two RBI, while freshman Kelsey Arnold added a three-run double in the first inning.
Freshman Paige Parker got the win in relief to move to 13-3 on the season. She struck out five, walked one and gave up one hit while keeping the Red Raiders scoreless in the final 3.2 innings.
The Sooners used a patient approach at the plate to jump on Texas Tech starter Cara Custer in the first inning, scoring six runs while sending 10 batters to the plate.
Chamberlain and Shelby Pendley each drew walks to start the game, as did Parker to fill the bases. Miller then lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to get OU on the board. Two batters later, with runners on the corners, Nicole Pendley singled through the left side to push the lead to 2-0.
Junior Whitney Ellis was hit by a pitch to load up the bases, and senior Jessica Vest was also hit by a pitch to bring in the Sooners' third run of the inning. Making it through the entire lineup, the No. 9 hitter Arnold doubled high off the wall in left center to clear the bases and double the OU lead to 6-0.
Texas Tech got two of those six runs back in the bottom of the first thanks to a hit by pitch and walk in consecutive at-bats with the bases loaded.
Oklahoma countered with three runs of its own in the top of the second.
Shelby Pendley led off with a walk and Parker followed by getting hit by a pitch. Miller then singled through the right side to load the bases before Self brought home two runs with a double to left center. Nicole Pendley picked up her second RBI single of the day when she followed Self with a hit through the left side, giving OU a 9-2 lead.
The Red Raiders cut the Sooners' lead down to 9-6 after a four-run second inning.
The first two batters reached thanks to a hit by pitch and a fielding error, while a sacrifice bunt moved the pair into scoring position. Kierra Miles then singled up the middle to bring home two runs. A single and walk then refilled the bases, prompting a pitching change as Parker replaced starter Kelsey Stevens.
After a strikeout, a hit batter brought in the third run of the inning, and Susan Welborn singled to left field to make it 9-6.
A fielding error by Texas Tech allowed another OU run to score in the third, while Parker quieted the Red Raider bats for the next two innings before Oklahoma tacked on the final 11 runs in the fifth.
With runners on the corners, Miller singled to right field to bring in Chamberlain and move pinch-runner senior Callie Parsons to third base. Parsons scored on a wild pitch to give OU the 12-6 lead before Self hit her seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot, to put the run-rule into effect at 14-6.
Later in the frame, Chamberlain hit her grand slam to make it 18-6. The inning continued as Shelby Pendley and Parsons hit back-to-back singles. Sophomore Macey Hatfield pinch hit and drew a walk to fill the bases for freshman Destinie Lookout, who recorded the first two RBI of her career with a single to center field. OU reached its total of 21 runs when Nicole Pendley hit a run-scoring double in the next at-bat.
The 11 runs in the fifth inning marked the third time this season that OU scored double-digits in an inning. All of three of those instances have come since March 14.
After seven straight games away from Norman, OU returns to Marita Hynes Field for a game against Central Arkansas at 5 p.m. The game was originally to be a doubleheader at 4 p.m., but it has since been changed to a single game.
