NORMAN – No. 6/5 Oklahoma (29-5) hit four home runs, including two from freshman Lea Wodach, as the Sooners overpowered Central Arkansas (23-10), 12-6, Tuesday night at Marita Hynes Field.
The Sooners jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings before UCA responded with a six-run third inning. OU countered with a six-run third of its own to improve to 8-0 all-time against UCA. The 8-0 record marks the third-highest win total without a loss for Oklahoma against another team.
Oklahoma needed just three batters to start the scoring in the bottom of the first.
Senior Lauren Chamberlain led off the game with a walk, but it wasn't just any ordinary walk. It was the 179th walk of her career, breaking the all-time Big 12 record for career walks of 178 that she shared with Texas Taylor Hoagland (2010-13). Two batters later, freshman Paige Parker doubled to left center to stake the Sooners to an early 1-0 lead.
A pair of home runs in the second extended the OU lead to 6-0.
Freshman Nicole Pendley walked to start the inning before Wodach drilled a line drive to center field to make it 3-0. Fellow freshman Kelsey Arnold followed two batters later with a bloop double to right field. Chamberlain then sent a double to deep right field to put two into scoring position. After a flyout, Parker stepped in and launched a three-run blast to right field for her ninth home run of the season. The four RBI were a career high for Parker.
The 6-0 lead for Oklahoma quickly vanished though in the third when Central Arkansas batted around and tied the game at 6-6. The six runs allowed in the inning matched the most the Sooners had given up in one frame this year, also allowing six to Washington in the sixth inning on Feb. 13.
Central Arkansas loaded the bases with one out before getting on the board thanks to a bases-loaded walk from OU starter Kelsey Stevens. Sarah Bigej then grounded out to second to drive in another run and cut the lead to 6-2. Jessie Taylor followed Bigej with a double to right center than landed in between OU center fielder Nicole Pendley and right fielder Erin Miller. The two-run double made it 6-4, and the Bears tied the game one batter later when Hannah Stirton hit a home run to center field.
The game wouldn't stayed tied for very long, though, as Oklahoma batted around in its half of the third and plated six runs of its own.
Junior Kady Self started the inning with a walk and moved to third when Nicole Pendley doubled to center field. Wodach stepped in for the second time and hit a fly ball that kept carrying to center field and just cleared the fences and the glove of UCA centerfielder Amy Gunnells. Wodach went 3-4 at the plate with five runs driven in and two runs scored to set career highs in hits and RBI. It was the first multi-homer game of her career as she upped her season total to four.
After a pitching change and a foul out, Arnold reached safely on a fielding error by Bigej at second base. Chamberlain followed with a triple off the wall in right field to push the lead to 10-6. Shelby Pendley batted next and hit a no-doubt home run to left center. It was her 14th of the season, 55th at Oklahoma and the 74th of her career. She now has sole possession of 10th place on the all-time Division I home run list.
All 18 runs in the game came in the first three innings as neither team plated a run the rest of the way. Parker, who got the final out of the third, dominated the rest of the way for OU. She retired the first seven batters she faced after coming on in relief and finished with five strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work.
Parker improved to 14-3 on the year as she allowed two hits and no runs before giving way to junior Leslie Miller, who was making her season debut in the circle. Miller struck out two, walked one and gave up one hit to close out the game.
Oklahoma returns to conference play when Iowa State visits Norman for a three-game series. Friday's game starts at 6:30 p.m., while Saturday's doubleheader starts at 12 p.m.
