LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 6/6 Oklahoma (27-5, 2-0 Big 12) scored in every inning and hit five home runs as it clinched the series over Texas Tech (16-19, 0-2 Big 12) with a 13-5, six-inning win Saturday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field in Lubbock, Texas. The Sooners have now won eight straight Big 12 games dating back to last season.
The five-homer performance marked the third time this season that OU hit at least five home runs in a game as the team extended its winning streak over Texas Tech to nine games. The Sooners have outscored the Red Raiders, 77-15, in that span. The Sooners are also 45-7 (.865) all-time against Texas Tech, its best winning percentage against a Big 12 opponent.
Oklahoma posted its 11th double-digit scoring effort of the season, and 16th run-rule, thanks to nine hits and 11 walks, which was one off the team's season high.
Offensively, senior Shelby Pendley and junior Erin Miller each went 3-3 at the plate with a home run to lead the Sooners. Pendley scored twice and drove in two with a walk, while Miller scored three times and also drove in two and added a walk.
Pendley also earned the win in the circle as she came on in relief to throw the final 4.2 innings. In improving to 8-1 on the season, Pendley struck out five and allowed two runs on four hits and one walk.
Twenty-four times this season OU has scored first this season, and all 24 times the Sooners have gone on to win. Saturday was no exception as Oklahoma sent 10 to the plate in a four-run first.
Senior Lauren Chamberlain drew a one-out walk, bringing Pendley to the plate. After fouling off a pitch, Pendley crushed a no-doubt, two-run homer to center field. With the blast, Pendley moved into a tie for 10th on the all-time home run list with Washington's Jaime Clark (2000-03).
Freshman Paige Parker kept things going with a walk, and she moved up to second after Miller laid down a perfectly-placed bunt up the third-base line. Junior Whitney Ellis drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases before fellow junior Tori Nirschl was hit by the first pitch she saw to make it 3-0. The final run of the inning came when senior Jessica Vest drew a bases-loaded walk.
Oklahoma kept the offensive pressure up with two more runs in the second inning.
Pendley and Parker drew back-to-back walks with one out. Miller then collected her second hit of the game with an RBI double to center field. With two in scoring position, Ellis lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to extend OU's lead to 6-0.
Texas Tech cut the Oklahoma lead in half when Brittany Warnecke hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the second, but the Sooners got two of those runs back in the top of the third.
With Vest on first and two out, freshman Nicole Pendley roped a 1-0 pitch over the fence in right center. The two-run shot was the sixth of the year for Pendley, giving Oklahoma an 8-3 lead.
The lead grew to 9-3 in the fourth when Miller picked up her third hit of the game. This time it was a solo home run to right field for her fifth home run of the season.
The fourth and fifth home runs of the day came in the fifth inning when Vest and freshman Kelsey Arnold hit back-to-back shots. It was Vest's third homer of the year, while Arnold notched the first of her collegiate career.
OU was one out away from the run-rule win in the fifth, but Texas Tech's Kierra Miles hit a two-run homer to extend the game to the sixth inning.
The Sooners quickly got those two runs back in the top of the sixth, however.
Miller and Ellis drew back-to-back walks to start the frame. With freshman Lea Wodach pinch-hitting, the duo on the basepath attempted a double steal and an errant throw from Red Raiders catcher Kristi Belshe allowed Miller to score. Ellis took third on the play and came in to score when Wodach sent a sacrifice fly to right field.
Oklahoma will go for the series sweep Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
