BATON ROUGE, La. – Freshman Paige Parker threw her sixth shutout of the season and hit her eighth home run of the year as No. 6 Oklahoma snapped a two-game losing streak with a 3-0 win over McNeese State (23-10) Sunday afternoon at LSU's Tiger Park.
The win improves OU's record to 25-5 on the season. That marks the third time in the last four seasons that OU has won at least 25 of its first 30 games. In addition, OU prevented its first three-game losing streak since April 16-17, 2011.
After four and a half scoreless innings, OU relied on its freshmen to get all of the scoring done in the fifth.
Freshman Kelsey Arnold led off the inning by slapping a line drive over a drawn-in outfield. Arnold never slowed down and raced to third for her first career triple. Fellow freshman Nicole Pendley followed with a deep drive to center field that worked for a sacrifice fly, bringing home Arnold.
Senior Lauren Chamberlain kept things going with her second walk of the game. Two batters later, it was Parker who provided the clutch hit as she homered to left center. Her eighth homer of the year gave OU the 3-0 advantage.
The three-run inning came in support of Parker who improved her record to a team-best 11-3. The shutout was her sixth of the year individually and the ninth of which she has been a part. She struck out five and allowed just two hits with two walks.
She had four 1-2-3 innings during the game, doing so in the first, second, fourth and sixth innings. Both hits Parker allowed came in the third inning when McNeese State had its best scoring opportunity.
Maria Taunton and Dakota Matiko led off the inning with consecutive singles, the first and only of the game for the Cowgirls. A sacrifice bunt moved them up into scoring position, but OU's defense held them there.
Leadoff hitter Lauren Lagner hit a fly ball to medium-deep left field, but Taunton didn't try to test Kady Self's arm. Then, Emily Vincent hit a slow roller that got under Parker's glove, but shortstop Shelby Pendley was there to field and fire to first for the third out.
With no midweek games on the schedule, Oklahoma returns to action next weekend with its Big 12 opener at Texas Tech. The series starts Friday with a 6 p.m. contest. The three-time defending Big 12 champions lead the all-time series against the Red Raiders 43-7, including a 16-1 record in Lubbock. OU has won seven straight in the series and nine of the past 10 meetings.
