Baldy Castillo Invitational

March 21, 2015 | Track and Field
TEMPE, Ariz. – It was a day full of solid performances and those performances kept the OU men and women in the thick of the team standings. Ultimately, the Sooner women took third and the men finished sixth at the Baldy Castillo Invitational, the 2015 outdoor season opener.
As they did the entire 2014 season, Liz Herrs and Avione Allgood battled each other for the top spot in the javelin. The final placing was not settled until the final throw of the competition for each competitor. Herrs eventually won the title with a 177-9 and Allgood was second with 177-4.
Daye Shon Roberson led a two, three, four finish for the Sooners in the 200-meter dash with her 23.55. Leya Buchanan finished third and Ama Pipi was fourth as the trio produced 19 points toward the OU total.
Another scoring trio for the women came in the discus as the Sooners had the fourth-, sixth- and seventh-place finishers. Alex Morgan led the trio, finishing fourth with a 168-0. Kate Foster was sixth and Jess Woodard was seventh.
OU got double points in the women's 100-meter hurdles with Payton Stumbaugh and Makayla Stephens; the women's 400-meter dash with Daunicia Demerson and Payton Baker and the men's 100-meter dash with Trae Armstrong and Bennie Wesley.

Sarah Hall finished eighth in the pole vault and her 12-7.50 moved her to fifth on the all-time Sooner career list. The quartet of Pipi, Roberson, Demerson and Baker took second in the 4x400-meter relay with a 3:42.16.
The meet was the first of seven consecutive as OU heads to Austin for the 88th annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays next week. The multi-event student-athletes open their competition on Wednesday. Running and field events will begin on Thursday and run through Saturday in one of the classic meets of the outdoor season.
