OU Opens Outdoor Season in Tempe

NORMAN – Spring may start in Norman on Friday but the University of Oklahoma track and field teams took no chances when scheduling the 2015 season opener. OU will open the outdoor season in Tempe, Ariz., competing in the two-day Baldy Castillo Invitational.

Joining the Sooner in the field are the men's and women's teams of host Arizona State, Iowa, Iowa State, North Dakota State, South Dakota, Texas A&M, UC Irvine, and Washington as well as the Illinois women and the Minnesota men.

Competition for the Sooners will begin at 3 p.m. (CDT) with the men's hammer throw. The women's hammer will follow immediately. Three heats of the men's 1,500-meter run and two heats of the women's 1,500 will be run at 9:30 and 9:55 p.m.

Events on Saturday will start at 11 a.m. (CDT) with the men's discus to be followed by the women's discus. Field events continue throughout the day with the men's competition going first. Events on the track will start at 3 p.m. (CDT) with the men's 110-meter hurdles. The running events will be set up like the field events with the men's competition going first.

The Sooners have nearly 50 student-athletes who will be competing in the two-day meet. With the switch to the outdoor season of the track and field year, additional events are added to the meet schedule including the hammer, javelin, discus, the 400-meter relay and the steeplechase. The short sprints increase to 100 meters, from 60 meters, and there are two hurdle events, the 100/110 and the 400, instead of just the 60.

This meet opens the seven-week outdoor slate that leads into the Big 12 Championships May 15-17. The Sooners will compete will compete seven consecutive weekends during the outdoor season and will travel to meets in four states – Arizona, Texas, California and Pennsylvania before the conference meet.

The NCAA West prelims are scheduled May 28-30 in Austin. The top 48 individuals and top 24 relays will qualify for the meet in Austin. Those who finish in the top 12 in Austin will advance to Oregon for the NCAA Championships June 10-13.

The Sooners are coming off a solid indoor season, one that saw a Big 12 individual champion, an NCAA qualifier and top marks produced in every competition. The men finished fourth in the Big 12 Indoor while the women were seventh after nearly doubling the point total from a year ago.
