WICHITA, Kan. – No. 6 Oklahoma (24-3) continued its series domination over Wichita State (16-12) and pushed its season-best winning streak to 14 games with an 8-2 win at Wilkins Stadium Tuesday night.
The victory marked the 31st straight for the Sooners over the Shockers, its longest active winning streak against another opponent. In fact, Wichita State has not scored more than two runs in any of those 31 games.
Wichita State tried to change that early Tuesday night as it had the first scoring opportunity of the game in the bottom of the first.
With one out and one on, Liz Broyles doubled to the wall in left field to put a pair in scoring position. Paige Mason drew a walk to fill the bases, but freshman OU starter Paige Parker got out of the jam when she got Erin Carney to pop out to senior Lauren Chamberlain at first base.
Wichita State wasn't able to score with the bases packed in the first, but the Sooners capitalized on their own opportunity in the third.
Junior designated player Leslie Miller led the inning off with a five-pitch walk before she was pinch run for by senior Georgia Casey. Two batters later, freshman Nicole Pendley singled up the middle to put two runners on. Chamberlain followed with a grounder to Kelli Spring at shortstop. Spring turned to third to get the force out on Casey, but third baseman Mackenzie Wright couldn't make the catch.
The miscue loaded the bases for senior Shelby Pendley, who earlier in the day was named the NFCA National Player of the Week. She kept up her stellar play with a sharp single back up the middle to score the game's first run. Parker then doubled the lead as she drew a bases-loaded walk after a six-pitch at-bat.
The Shockers answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, though, to tie the game at 2-2.
With one out, Spring reached on a bunt single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Liz Broyles then drove her in with a sinking line drive that junior Erin Miller was unable to secure in right field after a diving attempt. The Shockers evened the game when Carney singled to right field to plate Broyles.
After a scoreless fourth, Oklahoma took the lead for good with a two-run fifth inning.
Chamberlain sparked the Sooners by ripping her fourth double of the season to left center. Shelby Pendley followed with a screaming line drive to the wall in right center. Chamberlain scored on the play and Pendley reached third thanks to a WSU throwing error. The error cost the Shockers another run as Pendley was able to score on the next batter as Parker grounded out to second.
OU gave itself some further cushion in the seventh inning thanks to junior Kady Self's first career grand slam.
Nicole Pendley hit a one-out single before Chamberlain walked and Shelby Pendley singled to fill the bases. A Parker strikeout after an eight-pitch at-bat gave Wichita State hope that it may escape the inning without further damage, but Self but a quick end to that as she hammered the first pitch she saw to right field for her fifth home run of the season.
The run scored by Chamberlain was her second of the evening and the 235th of her career. That broke the Big 12 record of 234 career runs scored shared by former Sooner Norrelle Dickson ('04-07) and Missouri's Rhea Taylor ('08-11).
Parker gave up nine hits and two runs but struck out eight and walked only one to improve to 10-2 on the season.
After playing six games in four days, the Sooners will have two days off before taking to the road to face No. 1/1 LSU on Friday and Saturday in Baton Rouge, La. Sunday, OU meets McNeese State in a neutral site contest.
