NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma women's golf team finished fourth in the 2015 Clover Cup on Sunday, shooting a final-round 301 (+13). The 15-team event was played at the par-72, 6,184-yard Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.
The Sooners, who ended the event with a 904 (+40), finished 19 strokes behind tournament champion Arizona State (+21). Notre Dame finished in second place at 896 (+32), and Big 12-opponent TCU placed third with an 898 (+34).
OU's Hannah Wood secured the individual title by recording a three-day 209 (-7). Wood recorded four birdies in Sunday's final round en route to a 69 (-3) and a two-shot win over Arizona State's No. 43-ranked Monica Vaughn. The title marks the first win of Wood's career and the Sooners' first since Chirapat Jao-Javanil won the 2014 Big 12 Championship last season.
“This means the world to me,” Wood said. “To be honest, I didn't think this was possible. It just gives me a huge confidence boost moving forward into our season. I'm exciting and waiting for my next sunset.”
Freshman Ana Ruiz tied for 32nd place with a three-round 231 (+15). Ruiz logged a 77 (+5) in the final round.
Sophomore Alexandra Kaui recorded a 78 (+6) in Sunday's round and finished tied for 35th place with a 232 (+16).
Freshmen Rylee Pedigo and Valerie Tanguay hold shares of 49th place, each recording a 235 (+20) in the tournament. Tanguay fired a tournament-best +5 on Sunday while Pedigo shot a 6-over 78.
Sophomores Maggie Neece and Amanda Johnson are playing as individuals in the tournament and are unattached from team scoring. Neece tied for 20th place with a 228 (+12), and recorded her first-career hole-in-one on the way to a 78 (+6) in Sunday's round. Johnson finished in 87th place with a 276 (+60). She tallied a tournament-best +14 in the final round.
Sixth-year OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell said she is excited to stay in Arizona and work with her team over the break.
“I'm really proud of Hannah (Wood) for playing solid all week. She's a great player, she works hard, and to win a tournament as a freshman is an incredible feat,” Drouin-Luttrell said. “As a team, we have some work to do with our short games. We have a few days of practice here in Arizona before we head home. It's a quick turnaround for us, but I have confidence that we will work hard and get better.”
The Sooners will stay in Arizona to practice for spring break and will compete in a match-play event with Texas A&M on Wednesday, March 18.
