NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma wrestling team dropped the second Bedlam meeting of the season, 25-9, to No. 7 Oklahoma State Sunday afternoon inside McCasland Field House.
The Sooners fell to 6-9 overall with the loss, including a 1-2 mark in Big 12 competition, while the Cowboys improved to 8-3 overall and 3-0 in conference duals.
OU tallied just two individual wins on the day, coming at 133 pounds and 197 pounds from redshirt junior Cody Brewer and freshman Andrew Dixon, respectively.
Fourth-year OU head coach Mark Cody said this dual has been like the past few in the sense that his team keeps making the same mistakes in the tough matches.
“We're just going to have to stay the course, and these guys are going to hear the same thing when we go back into the room,” Cody said. “If you want to be great at something you have to repeat it over and over and over again. If we want to be great I've got to keep repeating over and over where we're making those same mistakes. Hopefully we can clean things up going forward.”
In the 133-pound bout, Brewer started out strong against freshman Gary Wayne Harding, quickly recording a pair of takedowns and two three-point nearfalls. He then caught Harding, pinning him in 2:21 to tie the team score at 6 and bring the OU fans to their feet.
To close the contest, Dixon posted an 11-9 decision over his cousin, sophomore Luke Bean. Dixon held a 5-1 advantage after the second period and was able to hold off Bean by scoring two takedowns and two escapes in the final frame.
The Sooners surrendered a pair of heartbreakers at 157 pounds and 174 pounds after both matches went into two overtime segments. Redshirt senior and 15th-ranked Justin DeAngelis lost by criteria at 157 pounds to Anthony Collica, who won 10-9 because he accumulated the most riding time after the second ride out.
At 174 pounds, No. 17 Matt Reed was tied with No. 10 Kyle Crutchmer, 2-2, after the SV-2 period. Crutchmer rode out Reed in the first tiebreak to keep the score tied before adding an escape and takedown in the second tiebreaker to win the bout.
The dual started at heavyweight, where No. 5 Austin Marsden got OSU on the board first with an 8-3 decision of OU's No. 11-ranked Ross Larson. At 125 pounds, No. 9 Eddie Klimara topped OU freshman Ryan Millhof by 9-3 decision, and No. 16 Dean Heil downed freshman Trae Blackwell by decision, 8-3, at 141 pounds.
OSU's No. 4 Josh Kindig defeated redshirt freshman Shayne Tucker, 5-2, at 149 pounds, and top-ranked Alex Dieringer beat OU redshirt sophomore Clark Glass by major decision, 15-5. At 184 pounds, OU freshman Brooks Climmons narrowly fell to No. 16 Nolan Boyd by decision, 6-5.
Up next, the Sooners head to Chattanooga, Tenn., to take on Chattanooga in a National Duals Regional. The contest will be held at 2 p.m. CT on Sunday, Feb. 15, inside Maclellan Gym. Tickets can be purchased here.
