 Lauren Chamberlain // Sr. // IFAfter being held scoreless for the first five innings, Chamberlain sparked the offense with a solo home run to lead off the sixth. The solo shot was the first of four runs for OU to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 4-1 lead en route to a 5-1 win. It was the 78th homer of her career to move within 12 of the all-time record. |

TEMPE, Ariz. – Down to its final six outs, Oklahoma turned to one of its leaders and she delivered.
Senior Lauren Chamberlain's 78th career home run sparked the Sooners' four-run sixth inning as the No. 4/3 Oklahoma (9-0) softball team rallied for a 5-1 victory at No. 21/21 Arizona State (7-4) Saturday night at the Littlewood Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
Oklahoma's high-powered offense, which entered the game averaging 10.1 runs per contest, had been held in check for most of the night. The Sooners were hitting the ball hard but had five hits and no runs to show for it through five innings.
OU was also a victim of some bad luck early on as twice the team got runners on first and second with no out, but both times senior Shelby Pendley hit hard line drives right at infielders that turned into double plays.
Fortunes finally changed for OU in the sixth inning.
Trailing 1-0, Chamberlain led off the inning. After taking a called strike, she watched three pitches go by to get ahead 3-1 in the count. Chamberlain then unloaded a game-tying solo home run deep beyond the fence in left center field.
Chamberlain now sits 12 home runs away from tying the all-time NCAA Division I home run record of 90 set by UCLA's Stacey Nuveman.
Pendley followed Chamberlain with a sharp single to left field, and she moved to second on a wild pitch as junior Erin Miller batted. Miller then went the other way on a 1-2 pitch and hit a grounder that bounced off the glove of third baseman Haley Steele. The ball careened into center field, which allowed Pendley to score from second base and give OU the 2-1 lead.
Junior Kady Self followed Miller and drove a 1-0 pitch to straightaway center field for her first home run of the season and the seventh of her career.
The Sooners picked up an insurance run in the seventh as freshman Nicole Pendley drew a leadoff walk and, two batters later, her sister Shelby Pendley drove her in with a double to the gap in left-center to push the lead to 5-1.
The offense rewarded true freshman Paige Parker, who limited the Arizona State damage to just a lone RBI double in the first inning.
Elizabeth Caporuscio hit a one-out single and was replaced by pinch runner Breona Peralta. The move for more speed on the bases paid off because two batters later Amber Freeman laced a double to left center and Peralta scored from first to give the Sun Devils the early lead.
In throwing her first seven-inning complete game, Parker struck out four, walked five and allowed one run on five hits.
After the first inning, Parker didn't allow another hit until the sixth. She faced a threat in the third when Arizona State got runners on the corners with two outs, but Parker got Chelsea Gonzales to pop out to freshman Kelsey Arnold at third.
She had her lone 1-2-3 inning in the fifth, which appropriately came against the heart of ASU's order as Caporuscio flew out to center, Steele struck out swinging and Freeman fouled out to right.
Arizona State threatened again in the sixth as Arizona State got runners on first and second with one out. A force out at second put runners on first and third with two out and Parker picked up her final strikeout of the game as she got Jennifer Soria with a rise ball.
Oklahoma had to withstand one more ASU surge in the seventh.
After a leadoff bunt single, Shelby Pendley made a tremendous diving grab of a line drive at shortstop. On the very next batter, Steele hit a deep drive to center but Nicole Pendley ran back to the warning track and made the catch just in front of the wall for the second out. A single to right by Freeman brought the tying run to the plate, but Parker got Bethany Kemp to foul out to Miller in right field.
Oklahoma wraps up play at the Littlewood Classic with a rematch against Arizona State Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT.
