Alvarez Qualifies for Main Draw in Mansfield

MANSFIELD, Texas – Oklahoma men's tennis player Axel Alvarez grabbed a straight-sets win in the qualifying draw of the Mansfield Futures on Monday at the Walnut Creek Country Club in Mansfield, Texas.

The 6-3, 6-2 win over freshman Jimmy Bedneck of Baylor secures Alvarez a place in the 32-player main draw which begins Tuesday. Alvarez, the reigning national and Big 12 Player of the Year, received a bye in the first round of qualifying and then topped Iznaur Akhmaev of Russia in the second round on Sunday.

Alvarez will face Ronald Slobodchikov of Russia on Tuesday in the first round of main draw play.
