TEMPE, Ariz. – Led by a career-best throw by Elizabeth Herrs in the javelin, the Sooner track and field teams had a successful second day of competition in the Baldy Castillo Invitational hosted by Arizona State University.
Herrs led a 1-2-3 sweep for the Sooners in the javelin with a 176-2. That mark is the country's leading effort for women after the first full weekend of outdoor competition.
Sooner All-American Avione Allgood finished second with a 168-2 and Ashley Kowalewski came in third with a 152-7.
The javelin throwers weren't the only Sooners to post a 1-2 event finish. Nolan Hay won the men's long jump with a 24-11 and Hayden McClain finished second with a 24-3.75. Both marks were outdoor long jump career highs for the Sooner freshmen.
In the men's javelin, Tyler Renton recorded a 221-03 to finish second. Garrett Snow jumped into fourth on the all-time career list with a 217-11 and TJ Noonan finished seventh with a 198-7.
Alexandra Morgan and Kate Foster opened their first competition this season with second- and fourth-place finishes in the discus, respectively. Today's meet is the first time for either to compete this year. Morgan had a 162-0 and Foster recorded a 156-9. Freshman Garrison LeRock earned a second-place tie in the high jump with a6-9.75.
On the track, the Sooner men finished second in the 4x100 relay with a 41.32. That quartet included Matt Wicks, Waymon Storey, Ethan Baker and Scott Petersen.
The outdoor season continues next week when OU travels to the Texas Relays in Austin.
