HONOLULU -- Thirteen Sooners competed at the inaugural Aloha Open on Tuesday, with Clark Glass and Ross Larson taking first place at 165 pounds and heavyweight, respectively. The event was held inside McKinley High School and featured four teams, including Oklahoma, No. 1 Minnesota, No. 20 Oregon State and American.

Each squad could bring up to 15 wrestlers for the contest, which utilized a round-robin format where each competitor faced all other participants in his respective weight class. Following the round-robin, the wrestlers with the best records were named the champions in each weight class and qualified for an offseason trip to compete internationally with Team USA.

“This is a great concept because of the fact it was a round-robin event and every one of the guys we brought with us was able to wrestle an average of five matches,” OU head coach Mark Cody said. “This gives our coaching staff a great perspective on where we are right now and what we need to improve on.

“I'm particularly proud of the performances of Ross Larson, Zach Merrill, Justin DeAngelis, Clark Glass and Ryan Millhof,” Cody continued. “These individuals all competed well and fought hard.”

Glass, a redshirt sophomore, finished atop the 165-pound division with a 3-1 record, with all three wins coming via decision.

Larson, who is ranked No. 11/10/8 by InterMat/TOM/AWN, secured the heavyweight title with the help of two falls. On the season, 11 of Larson's 16 wins have come via pins.

Grabbing runner-up recognition were freshman Millhof (125 pounds), freshman Trae Blackwell (141 pounds), redshirt sophomore Matt Reed (174 pounds) and redshirt senior Merrill (heavyweight).

DeAngelis, a redshirt senior who is ranked No. 11/9/8, finished third at 157 pounds, while redshirt sophomore Brad Johnson did so at 197 pounds.

Fourth-place finishers for the Sooners were Shayne Tucker (149 pounds), freshman Brooks Climmons 184 pounds) and freshman Andrew Dixon (197 pounds). Sophomore Sean Williams (125 pounds) and senior Michael Brown (heavyweight) took fifth in their respective weight classes.

The Sooners return to the mat on Thursday, Jan. 8, as they travel to Washington, D.C., to face fellow Aloha Open participant American. The dual will begin at 7 p.m. CT.
