ITHACA, N.Y. -- The No. 21 University of Oklahoma wrestling team dropped its first dual of the season, falling at No. 3 Cornell by a 21-13 mark Saturday night inside Newman Arena.
The Sooners are now 3-1 on the season, while Cornell is 1-0. In the contest, OU won four matches, and the Big Red secured six.
"Our staff felt that after we won at 141 that we had a great shot to win, and we did not expect to lose 165 or 174," OU head coach Mark Cody said. "When you get in a tough situation you have to be able to fight outside of your comfort zone, and that did not happen tonight in certain matches.
"On the positive side, I am very excited about this staff - they say the right things and do the right things and nothing is beneath them," Cody continued. "Their hard work will pay off by March."
The dual started with the 125-pound bout, which pitted OU freshman Ryan Millhof against two-time All-American and Nahshon Garrett. Millhof held strong against the No. 2-ranked wrestler but lost by decision, 6-2.
The Sooners got on the board as two-time All-American Cody Brewer, ranked No. 3 at 133 pounds, downed Bricker Dixon by 12-4 major decision.
Freshman Trae Blackwell added a second straight win for OU by topping Nick Arujau at 141 pounds. Blackwell, who trailed 4-0 after the first period and 5-2 after the second, stormed back to take the match by a 8-6 score in overtime.
At 149 pounds, redshirt freshman Shayne Tucker fell to No. 7 Chris Villalonga of Cornell by a 13-4 major decision, tying the dual at 10. Redshirt senior and No. 13 Justin DeAngelis answered by defeating Taylor Simaz by decision, 7-3, to give OU the 13-10 advantage.
The Big Red then rattled off four straight wins, taking the 165, 174, 184 and 197 matches. In the 165-pound bout, redshirt sophomore Clark Glass lost to Jesse Shanaman by a 4-1 decision, and Matt Reed lost by a narrow 8-6 mark in overtime to Duke Pickett at 174 pounds.
Cornell's top-ranked Gabe Dean rolled in the 184-pound match, defeating Greg Wilson by technical fall, 17-0. At 197 pounds, freshman Andrew Dixon made his dual debut for the Sooners, dropping a close 6-5 decision to Owen Scott.
Senior Zach Merrill closed the dual with a win at heavyweight for the Sooners, beating Jacob Aiken-Phillips by decision, 4-0.
The Sooners will return to the mat on Saturday, Nov. 29, as they compete in the Northeast Duals in Troy, N.Y.
