TROY, N.Y. -- The No. 19 University of Oklahoma wrestling team dropped two contests at the 12th annual Journeyman/ASICS Northeast Duals on Saturday, losing to Rutgers by a narrow 20-18 mark and to No. 5 Missouri, 27-9. A total of 17 teams competed at the event, held at Hudson Valley Community College.
The Sooners (3-3 overall) fell to No. 3 Cornell last Saturday, and OU head coach Mark Cody said facing such strong competition early in the season should benefit his young squad down the road.
“We need more consistency from everyone,” Cody said. “We're losing several close matches. It will be a process with this team. We wrestled three of the best teams in the country this week, and I'm hoping this experience will pay off at the end of the year at NCAAs.”
OU and Rutgers split their 10 matches, but two bonus-points victories for the Scarlet Knights at 141 and 184 pounds compared to the Sooners' one proved to be the difference in the dual.
Registering wins for the Sooners were redshirt junior Cody Brewer (133 pounds), redshirt senior Justin DeAngelis (157 pounds) and redshirt sophomores Clark Glass (165 pounds), Brad Johnson (197 pounds) and Ross Larson (heavyweight).
At 133 pounds, No. 3 Brewer tied the dual at three after defeating Rutger's Scott DelVecchio by decision, 11-5. The 157-pound bout featured two ranked wrestlers as No. 13 DeAngelis took on No. 5 Anthony Perrotti, upsetting the Rutgers redshirt junior by a 6-3 decision.
Glass beat Ethan Orr by decision, 5-2, while Brad Johnson topped Anthony Pafumi by a 3-2 decision. In the dual's final match, No. 12 Larson pinned Wesley Bernard in 0:28.
Against the Tigers, the Sooners grabbed wins at 133 pounds, 165 pounds and 174 pounds.
Brewer's 10-5 decision of Zach Synon at 133 pounds moved the two-time All-American to 9-0 on the season, including 6-0 in dual competition. At 165 pounds, Glass registered his second win of the event, defeating Missouri's Ty Prazma by decision, 8-1.
OU redshirt sophomore Matt Reed and No. 15 Mikey England squared off in the 174-pound contest. Reed secured the upset, edging England by decision, 5-4.
The Sooners return to the mat at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 7, as they face No. 9 Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla., in the first of two Bedlam matchups this season.
